Boyo MP, Hon Wainanchi Honourine, kidnapped.

The Member of Parliament, MP, for Boyo constituency in North West Region, Hon Wanainchi Honourine, is reportedly being held hostage by suspected Amba fighters after she was kidnapped, Sunday February 5.

The Guardian Post gathered that the politician was travelling from her native Belo in Boyo Division to the Regional capital, Bamenda.

We further learned that it was in the course of the journey that she was intercepted and whisked off around Bambui, Tubah Subdivision in Mezam Division.

The kidnap of the MP was confirmed by his colleague, Hon Njong Evaristus, who doubles as Regional Chairman of opposition Social Democratic Front, SDF party for the North West Region.

Hon Njong told this reporter when reached on phone yesterday that he has been in contact with the son of the kidnapped lawmaker to know the circumstances surrounding her abduction and the actual situation on ground.

“I have been talking with the son. He told me that he first called his mother on the night she was kidnapped but didn’t have the opportunity to really discuss with her since her abductors abruptly put off the phone,” Hon Njong said.

The lawmaker added that the family was still trying to talk with those holding her in captivity. The MP regretted that they of the SDF party who have been very vocal, calling on government to resolve the crisis in the North West and South West Regions are instead targeted by those they are speaking out for.

Quizzed on why the SDF is yet to issue a statement more than 48 hours after her abduction, Hon Njong said their interest is more about working out a strategy to see how she can regain her freedom.

A very close relation to the MP contacted for comments, declined to give any insight surrounding her abduction. The source also failed to indicate whether the abductors are demanding any ransom to secure her release.

Hon Wainanchi is a second term member of the Lower House of Parliament. She was first elected in 2013 and was re-elected in 2020 for another five-year mandate.

She becomes the second lawmaker from the crisis-hit North West Region to be kidnapped within a period of eight months.

Before her, Senator Regina Mundi was abducted in Bamenda in May 2022. She spent a month in captivity before she was freed by BIR soldiers.

Also worth recalling is the fact that Senator Kemende Henry of the SDF, was shot dead in his car in Bamenda in 2022.

Since the outbreak of the Anglophone crisis in 2016, politicians are among those who have been targeted by Ambazonia separatist fighters who have been fighting to create a putative breakaway state from the country.
