Implementing corporate social responsibility: NHPC donates classrooms, medical equipment to Batchenga, Ntui, Obala communities.

Obala District Hospital official raising keys to mini-oxygen plant as NHPC MD & Hospital Director look on

The Nachtigal HydroPower Company, NHPC, has handed over some education infrastructures and medical equipment to some surrounding communities around the project in the Centre Region.

The donations were made on October 2, during an inauguration tour led by the Managing Director of NHPC, Claire Gall.

A total of four blocks of nine modern classrooms, two blocks of 12 latrines and an oxygen plant were retroceded across Batchenga, Ntui and Obala subdivisions. The separate events were attended by the respective administrative, municipal and traditional authorities.

The infrastructures and material donations, officials said, cost over 150 million FCFA. In Batchenga, the company constructed and equipped a block of three classrooms at Government Primary School Ndji village and another block of two classrooms at Government Primary School in Biyaga village.

Over in Ntui, the company built and equipped a block of two classrooms and a block of six latrines at the Franco-Arab School in Bindalima I village.

Besides the construction and equipping of two classrooms and a block of six latrines at Government Primary School Minkama, NHPC provided the Obala population with a mini oxygen plant at the Emergency Centre of the Obala District Hospital.

According to the NHPC Managing Director, the initiative is part of the implementation of NHPC's Environmental and Social Management Plan.

Claire Gall said it demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting local development in the area where the Nachtigal hydroelectric power plant is located.

She used the event to count the recent achievements of the classroom and latrine construction programme of the NHPC initiated in 2019.

The MD said more than six schools of over 2,000 pupils have so far benefited from NHPC investment of around 400 million FCFA.

“This investment has been made by NHPC because at NHPC, we are convinced that development depends on one of its strong pillars, which is education. That is why we were keen to develop a programme to strengthen school infrastructure,” she told the press.
With regards to the equipment donated at the Obala District Hospital, the NHPC Managing Director insisted that health is another important pillar of development.

Beneficiaries overwhelmed by NHPC gesture

Going by the Head Teacher of Government Primary School Ndji, Manga Jeanne-Marie, they had been facing infrastructural problems for 29 years.

Manga said since taking office as Head Teacher, she has witnessed the great projects carried out by NHPC in Batchenga in general.

While thanking the NHPC Managing Director for the vital infrastructure, the Headmaster of Government Primary School Minkama, Mbassi Mballa Stanislas said the facility will greatly benefit learners.

"It will relieve the congestion we had because we were short of classrooms. So these two rooms are very welcome," he stated, adding that the toilet will improve the hygiene and sanitation of the school.

He also stressed that whosoever promotes education is changing the lives of many and improving their chances of succeeding in life.

The representative of the Mayor of Batchenga, Anatole Souga, thanked the company for the social projects it has been carrying out in their municipality.

Souga assured benefactors that the new classrooms will shape the future of the youths in the community. She urged the company not to relent its efforts in bringing more support to the community for the good of citizens.

NHPC’s impactful records

It is worth noting that in 2021, the company carried out similar projects with two blocks of three classrooms and two blocks of latrines constructed and equipped at the Government Primary school in Ndji.

Since its creation, the NHPC has already carried out several actions in favour of local communities.

In the field of education, more than 15 modern classrooms have been built and equipped in public schools in the project area, improving learning conditions for more than 1,000 pupils.

With regards to health, NHPC has built and equipped an emergency department at Obala District Hospital, as well as a medical waste incinerator. A high-standard hospital building has also been renovated and a medical ambulance made available.

In Mbandjock, a modern radiology department has been installed, while in Batchenga, a maternity ward has been built and the main building of the medical centre and the chief physician's residence have been renovated.

About plant

The Nachtigal hydroelectric power plant, it should be noted, has an installed capacity of 420 MW, representing approximately 30% of Cameroon's electricity needs.

The plant became fully operational in May 2025 and had a cumulative production of more than 2TWh at the end of September 2025.

With its green, available and competitive electricity, Nachtigal plant project is now one of the main players in Cameroon's electricity system and contributes to the country's sustainable development.
