North West Region football club, PWD of Bamenda suffered their first home defeat of the season in the MTN Elite One championship.

The Abakwa Boys, as they are also referred to, lost a game in the top tier since the start of the league earlier this year following a 1-0 loss to Victoria United FC.

This was during matchday 14 of the Elite One at the Bamenda I Proximity Stadium.

The fixture marked the start of the second phase of the Elite One after a two weeks break.

Hundreds of fans across the North West Region trooped into the Bamenda I Proximity Stadium to roar their team to success in the Anglophone derby.

PWD of Bamenda headed into the fixture with memories of their 3-0 defeat suffered to Victoria United FC in the first leg in Limbe during their first game of the season.

They were keen on paying the visitors in their own coins but plans backfired and title ambitions were dealt a devastating blow when Sanda Fouda scored the solitary goal on 63 minutes.

The defeat means PWD of Bamenda dropped from the third to the fourth position in the Elite One table with 23 points and seven points behind the top spot.

Victoria United FC on their part returned to winning ways after a two-match winless run. They moved to the eighth position and levelled on points with seventh place Dynamo of Douala.

Invincible no more

Before Sunday’s game, PWD of Bamenda were invincible at home with a perfect record. Many fans even labelled the Bamenda I Proximity Stadium as “The Slaughter House”.

In the first phase of the Elite One Championship, PWD of Bamenda won six of their seven home matches with 15 goals scored and four conceded.

There were notable wins against Stade Renard, Gazelle FA of Garoua, Panthere Sportive of Nde, Coton Sport of Garoua, Aigle Royal of the Menoua and Aigle of the Moungo.

Only AS Fortuna of Yaounde returned with a point following a goalless stalemate. They started the second phase of the league the same way they started the first and were handed a brutal reality check.

PWD of Bamenda will be hoping to bounce back from the defeat. They are scheduled to welcome Unisport of the Upper Nkam, Fauve Azur and CAnon Sportive of Yaounde in their next home fixtures. The team will be poised to make amends for their defeat especially against their eternal foes.

Unisport miss chance, Colombe wins

Elite One leaders, Unisport, failed to go seven points clear at the top of the table after they were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation battling Aigle Royal of the Menoua.

The league’s joint top scorer, Blaise Ndiforchu, thought he had scored the winner six minutes to halftime but Unisport levelled through Fredy Lobe Mbeng in stoppage time.

The draw ended Unisport’s run of four successive wins in the league.

It was also only their third draw this season. They remain at the top of the table with 30 points.

Their nearest challengers, Coton Sport, suffered a slim 1-0 defeat to reigning champions Colombe Sportive of the Dja and Lobo.

Colombe’s skipper, Randy Ntuwe, was the hero of the game with his fine free-kick on the stroke of halftime the difference in the game.

It is a major slip up for Coton Sport although Unisport failed to take advantage.

Colombe on the other moved up to third with 23 points and continued their quest to retain the trophy while Coton Sport remained second.

In the other games, 10-man Gazelle FA denied bottom place Aigle Royal of the Moungo a vital win in their relegation battle with a 1-1 draw.

The early kick-off games saw Dynamo of Douala secure a 3-1 win at AS Fortuna while Zacharie Ebogo scored a stoppage time winner for Canon Sportive of Yaounde at Stade Renard of Melong.

Canon is now fifth with 22 points while Stade Renard remained in the bottom five.
