Yaounde: CAMTEL, Ethio Telecom sign deal to boost digital transformation.

Cameroon’s incumbent telecoms company, Cameroon Telecommunications, CAMTEL, has sealed a strategic agreement with its Ethiopian counterpart, Ethio Telecom.

The Master Service Agreement signed Thursday in Yaounde, seeks to among other things, help CAMTEL boost its digital transformation drive in the country.



The signing of the three-year agreement was the culmination of a long period of exchanges between the two telecommunications giants.

Through the partnership, CAMTEL will tap from the huge experience of Ethio Telecom, the continent’s oldest and largest telecommunications operator.

While the General Manager of CAMTEL, Judith Yah Sunday epse Achidi, signed the deal on behalf of the state-run corporation, the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Ethio Telecom, Frehiwot Tamiru, did same for the Ethiopian company. 

The youthful CEO was the head of a high-powered delegation from the East African nation.

Yesterday’s agreement was signed in the presence of several Cameroonian authorities including the Special Adviser at the Prime Minister’s Office, Prof Cosmas Cheka

Speaking shortly after signing the agreement, CAMTEL GM first thanked the Ethiopians for accepting to collaborate with her company.

She explained that: “This is an agreement that is going to last for three years. It is a three-year project”.

Describing the Ethiopian telecoms giants as the most experienced in the continent of Africa, Judith Yah Sunday noted that: “We all know that Ethio telecom is the biggest in Africa in terms of revenue, human resources; they have more than 16,000 staff, they have 86 million customers and 731 billion FCFA in terms of revenue and they have transformed their country digitally”.

She continued that: “So, Ethio Telecom is a model for us and it was important that we sign this south-South cooperation with them so that we can benefit from their experience”.

Taking the cue, the Ethio Telecom CEO, Frehiwot Tamiru, explained that her delegation was in Cameroon “because CAMTEL is embarking on a major milestone with its decision to go completely digital. I am privilege to be here with my team and to share our experience. As you know, Ethio Telecom is the first telecoms operator in Africa”

The CEO detailed that: “We are here to share our vast experience. Ethio Telecom is one of the largest and the first operator in Africa to provide telecoms services. we have been serving our nation proudly for more than 131 years”.

She continued that: “Recently, especially in the past six years, we have brought major changes to Ethiopia’s digital transformation because of the vast infrastructure that we have been building. Today, we are serving more than 86 million subscribers”.

“So, we are here to share this vast proven experience especially about digital solutions that can innovate and change the way we live and the way we do business,” she added.

“With our proven records in the African market, Ethio telecom is partnering with CAMTEL. We will be privilege to work with CAMTEL management and share our experience and support them to realise their vision to digitally empower Cameroon. by so doing, CAMTEL will play its role in the digital transformation of the nation,” she also stated.

“We are aware that Cameroon’s digital strategy is also in line with Africa’s digital strategy;2020-2030 and we are here to help them realise that vision. We are glad to be part of this important journey and we are here to encourage CAMTEL and the Cameroonian government to look for digital solutions,” the CEO disclosed before, noting that: “As Africans, we know that we have natural resources that we need to unlock in order to benefit from the potential”. 

“We are here as national operator and a power house in Africa. We are here to make CAMTEL’s vision a reality. We are here to work for a digitally connected, empowered and prosperous Africa. We are partnering with CAMTEL to make their dream, a reality,” Tamiru concluded.
