To meet growing energy transition challenges: Cameroon Gas Association relaunches activities.

Stakeholders in gas industry immortalise CGA General Assembly

To better address growing global energy transition challenges, stakeholders in the national gas industry have relaunched the activities of Cameroon Gas Association, CGA, which went comatose since 2009.

The association was revived and relaunched last Friday, October 31, during the General Assembly of CGA, which held in Yaounde.

The relaunch follows recommendations which stakeholders made during a strategic consultation meeting which held in Yaounde last September 24.

The move, officials said, is to enable stakeholders to better mutualise efforts of public and private actors to rethink policies that would stimulate innovation and strengthen the place of gas in the country’s economy.

Deliberations at the General Assembly were chaired by Nathalie Moudiki, on behalf the Executive General Manager of the National Hydrocarbons Corporation, SNH, who doubles as Chairman of the Board of the Cameroon Gas Association, Minister Adolphe Moudiki.

She, on behalf of CGA Board Chairman, expressed hopes that the session will be used to reaffirm the commitment of the actors in the gas chain to having a unifying framework for defending their shared interests and promoting the national gas sector.

“Indeed, in a global context marked by major energy and environmental challenges, it is imperative to pool our energies, better define the national stakes, and adopt suitable strategies to strengthen the CGA’s role with the public authorities, with the aim of fostering the development of the gas industry and, consequently, the development of our country. We possess the necessary skills to succeed in this challenge and, together, we shall achieve it,” she stated on behalf of Minister Adolphe Moudiki.

She told stakeholders that the importance of natural gas as a clean, transition, and sovereign energy source, is no longer in doubt given current global affairs.

The CGA Board Chair’s representative said Cameroon holds significant potential in this regard, with its rational and forward-looking exploitation likely to strengthen the economy and consolidate national energy security.

She also underscored the crucial need to work towards the implementation of the resolutions of September 24 consultation of with a view to the rebirth of the association and establishment of an innovative and sustainable strategy.

The relaunch of CGA, she said, brings greater vitality in its leadership, new membership and improve governance of the operational bodies.

The General Assembly, she added, was also to reach out to various stakeholders to better publicise the association’s objectives and activities.

She on behalf of the Board chair, urged all stakeholders to rally forces behind the association to address imminent challenges for a resilient, competitive national gas industry serving Cameroon and future generations.

She also reiterated the commitment and full participation of the SNH in all CGA actions, for a bright future for the gas industry, in line with the development vision of the Head of State, Paul Biya.

The President of the Organising Committee of the General Assembly, Claudine Manga, said the relaunch was important as the last the meeting was held in 2005, the last General Assembly in 2009 and last transactions in the accounts in 2013.

“So, you can see that the association was somewhat dormant. So, we are relaunching these activities because gas is one of our main sources of energy for the country's development right now…we want to bring together all the players, all the stakeholders, so that everyone can contribute to the effort,” Manga stated.

On his part, the President Director General of Addax Petroleum, Xing Qinghe, said the relaunch will help actors focus efforts on gas development as a substitute for oil.

“As we all know, the country needs energy…we are very glad to have resumed this association,” Qinghe said.

New board, executive bureau, committees set up

Separate resolutions signed after the session set up the governing body, executive bureau and permanent committees of the association.

It also announced the newly elected executive bureau that is headed by the Executive General Manager of SNH, Adolphe Moudiki, as president.

He is assisted by Director General of the Hydrocarbons Prices Stabilisation Fund, CSPH, Okie Johnson Ndoh as Vice President and the Director General of ADDAX PCC as second vice president alongside other members.

Four strategic commissions were also set up to carry out activities viz. This includes the Production, Transportation and Treatment Commission, the Utilisation and Gas Distribution Commission, the Strategy, Economic, Financing and Global Perspectives Commission as well as the Technology, Innovation, Security, Environment, Information and Communication Commission.

Zoom on hydrocarbon resources

The national oil and gas domain, it should be said, holds significant hydrocarbon resources, predominantly distributed between the Rio-del-Rey Basin and the Douala/Kribi/Campo (DKC) Basin.

Specifically, concerning natural gas, the reserves are currently estimated at approximately 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) which is equivalent to 172 billion cubic metres.
