Burkina Faso: Five Cameroonian productions to be screened at FESPACO.

One Cameroonian short film, two series and two Cameroonian documentaries have been selected to be projected at the 29th edition of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou, FESPACO.

The festival opens on February 22, in Burkina Faso.

The 29th edition of FESPACO will bring together 48 countries, with Chad as its special guest of honour.

Among the productions to be projected is a short documentary by film Director, Eugénie Metala, titled: “Sita Bella la première”. The documentary will be projected for the first time at an international festival.

The 31-minute documentary pays tribute to Thérèse Sita-Bella, a pioneer of cinema and journalism in Cameroon.

Sita-Bella was the first Sub-Saharan African woman to have practiced the said professions, in addition to being an airplane pilot.

The other productions listed includes “Monkam”, a series by Narcisse Wandji, “Mambar Pierrette”, a long documentary by Rosine Mbakam, the series “Cicatrices” by Anurin Mwumembom and the film, “Half Heaven” by Enah Johnscott.

According to the President of the Organising Committee, Fidèle Aymar Tamini, the festival aims to present the remarkable vitality of African and diaspora film productions, despite the financial difficulties facing the sector.

The organising committee chair added that some of the selected films will be screened as world premieres.

“The particularity of this edition is the quantity and quality of the films. For the first time in the history of FESPACO, we required that registrations be paid. Despite this, many directors and producers sent a lot of films,” Tamini said.

The General Delegate of FESPACO, Moussa Alex Sawadogo, also indicated that there is enthusiasm considering the number of accredited people, we know that the edition will be grandiose.

Sawadogo said: “Every director or producer dreams of having their world premiere at FESPACO. It is a way of making a pilgrimage to the temple of the greats of African cinema. Beyond the prize, being selected at FESPACO, this opportunity already represents a big step in their career. It allows them to participate in other festivals”.

According to the General Delegate of FESPACO, the major innovation of this edition is the establishment of a new section called “Critics' Week”, where ten films have been registered for that category.
