One of the humourists auditioning in Douala

Premium beer brand of the leading brewery company, Boissons du Cameroun, Castel beer, has launched the fifth edition of talent scout for humourists in Cameroon.

The casting of the 5th season of the concept, dubbed "My First Montreux Africa by Castel Beer”, began in the city of Douala on Wednesday, January 8.

The competition, which includes 10 French-speaking African countries, aims to unearth the comedic talent that will make Africa shine during the "Montreux Comedie Festival" in Switzerland, scheduled for November this year.

At the auditions in Douala, the jury, led by the artistic director, Ludivine Bowjoux, said what they are looking for is a person who can transport the audience into their world, while remaining authentic and funny.

“The idea is to share an African laugh comic genres that can appeal to an international audience," Ludivine explained.

Fanck Paulin Lengue, Product Manager at Boissons du Cameroun, highlighted the brands commitment to promoting African talents.

"Comedy is a growing talent; supporting an initiative like this, which is one of the largest French-speaking comedy festivals, is part of Castel's desire to promote African cultural DNA," he said.

About 15 young candidates of different ages, in an attempt to convince the jury, used seven minutes to express themselves on varied themes such as education, African culture, immigratio, marriage, relationships, funerals or even the socio-economic challenges of the continent.

As for the selection criteria, the candidates must have been born and reside in one of the ten participating countries; Côte d'Ivoire, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Cameroon, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso and Gabon.

They also have to be in possession of an international passport, have a perfect command of the French language, and above all know how to make people laugh while maintaining their cultural identities. Though the number to be selected is very slim and limited to two per country, the comics see the platform as an open door to greater opportunities.

One of them, Dieunedort Tchuemtchoua, comedian and cultural entrepreneur, noted that “we are aiming for an international career; this casting can be a gateway, so I said to myself, why not try?"

Aside the two auditions in Douala and Yaounde, an online platform on the Castel beer website remains open for candidates from remote areas or those who cannot travel to also compete.
