Minister hails fruits of Sino-Cameroon trade relations.

Chinese diplomat, trade boss during audience

The Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, has lauded the milestones of Sino-Cameroon trade cooperation.

The minister was speaking in Yaounde, May 29, during a farewell audience he granted to the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Cameroon, H.E Wang Yingwu.

The audience was part of activities marking the end of Ambassador Wang’s seven-year mission in the country.

Minister Mbarga Atangana and his guest used the meeting to review the achievements of Sino-Cameroon cooperation in the domain of trade.

Reports hold that discussions centred on strengthening bilateral trade ties, displaying the tangible results of what both officials described as a "fruitful strategic partnership".

Media reports indicate that both personalities used the meeting to discuss preparations for the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation, WTO, which Cameroon will host from March 26 to 29, 2026, at the Yaounde Conference Centre.

Mbarga Atangana and Wang are also said to have recalled that the Yaounde Conference Centre was a gift from China to the Cameroonian people.

In this light, Minister Mbarga Atangana is said to have expressed the desire to have China support the country in ensuring the success of the globally important event.

The minister and the ambassador are also said to have touched on Chinese investments in Cameroon.

“In a way, China will also be in the spotlight during this major gathering, through the iconic Yaounde Conference Centre. We are hopeful that China’s multifaceted support will once again be evident in the run-up to this historic conference,” the minister is quoted as having affirmed.

Ambassador Wang on his part emphasised the strength of trade relations, noting the increasing flow of Cameroonian products into the Chinese market, and Chinese goods into Cameroon.

“…our discussions focused on the cooperation between our two countries, particularly in trade. There has been a significant rise in the sale of Cameroonian products in the Chinese market and vice versa,” the ambassador remarked.

Amid growing global protectionist tendencies, Ambassador Wang reiterated China’s commitment to maintaining an open trade policy, especially towards developing countries.

“Some countries are turning inward, imposing taxes and trade barriers. China, on the other hand, remains open to the world, especially to African and other developing nations,” he stated.

The diplomat added that the openness was evident in the growing presence of Chinese enterprises across Cameroon.

He highlighted the fact that state-owned and private Chinese firms have ventured into diverse sectors such as stone and tile manufacturing, cable production, construction materials, and paper packaging.

These ventures, he said will boost bilateral trade while contributing to Cameroon’s national industrial development.

Ambassador Wang expressed optimism about ongoing efforts and encouraged further direct foreign investment to strengthen the country’s productive sectors.

Reflecting on his tenure, Ambassador Wang Yingwu expressed deep affection for Cameroon and confidence in its future.

“Over the past seven years, I have witnessed and contributed to the growth of Sino-Cameroon cooperation. Cameroon has great potential and abundant human and natural resources. I strongly believe in the country's socio-economic development,” he remarked.
