At Labour Day celebration: CAMTEL GM warns against absenteeism, disregard of rules, standards.

CAMTEL General Manager during Labour Day dinner in Yaounde

The General Manager, GM, of Cameroon Telecommunications, CAMTEL, Judith Yah Sunday Epse Achidi, has stated that the state-run corporation will hence exercise zero tolerance towards absentee workers.

She sounded the stern warning Wednesday may 1, during a sumptuous dinner organised for workers of the enterprise as part of International Labour Day activities.

Speaking during the event attended by high profile guests, Judith Yah Sunday, was blunt that break time was over for staff of the company who outrightly disregard the corporation’s rules and standards.

The CAMTEL supremo told her audience that this year's theme, “Constructive Social Dialogue: Vector of Decent Work and Social Progress”, resonates deeply with the mission and values that drive in the company.

She said CAMTEL firmly believes that open, honest and constructive dialogue is the foundation of a harmonious relationship between management, employees and all stakeholders.

“It is through this dialogue that we can promote a working environment that is fair, respectful and conducive to everyone's professional fulfilment,” Judith Yah noted.

Ambition of becoming Africa’s best

While reaffirming the vision that guides CAMTEL’s path into the future, the GM told the gathering that corporation aspires to be an innovative corporate citizen and leader in digital transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.

She was quick to explain that the said ambitious vision reflects the company’s commitment to excellence, innovation and progress, while remaining true to its core values.

“Our values - Responsibility, Courtesy, Integrity, Commitment, Professionalism, Team Spirit, Quality, Innovation, Patriotism and Non-discrimination - are not just words, but principles that guide our every action, every day. They embody the very essence of who we are as a company and how we interact with the world around us,” she boasted.

She continued that: “However, despite our achievements and aspirations, we cannot ignore the challenges that lie ahead. The world of work is changing rapidly, and we need to adapt to stay relevant and competitive. This requires a renewed commitment to social dialogue, collaboration and innovation”.

The GM reminded her subordinates that: “We must be ready to listen, learn and evolve together to meet the challenges of the future”.

Beyond concerns relating to the company’s vision, aspirations, values and the attendant challenges mentioned above, the GM used the opportunity to salute the hard work and dedication each and every worker is putting into the company.

“Be it on the field or in the office, your contribution is invaluable and deserves to be recognised. Together, we have overcome hurdles, made progress, and set excellent standards that CAMTEL can be proud of. You can rest assured that top management is resolved to do its part and honour its commitments,” she said.

Discipline the watch word

But turning to other issues, the CAMTEL GM reminded workers of the company that as a leader in the telecommunications sector, the enterprise is aware of its duty towards its employees, customers, and society as a whole.

“That’s why we strive to ensure that our policies and actions reflect our values of social responsibility and patriotism. The timely disbursement of salaries and pensions, the payments made as a result of the reclassifications and advancements enacted recently, as well as our resolve to strengthen our technical workforce and renew health insurance, are all compelling evidence of this,” she said.

The GM was then blunt, stating that: “…I would also like to address some issues that have recently become a cause for concern within our company. Respecting internal rules and showing discipline and responsibility as individuals are essential aspects of our corporate culture. Failing to respect these principles compromises not only our operational efficiency, but also our reputation and integrity as an entity”.

She said many workers are guilty of disregarding the company’s rules and standards “from basic requirements like wearing a badge, which is mandatory, to following the dress code, with some staff becoming increasingly unkempt and or provocative in their dressing”.

She regretted that absenteeism is taking root, with some staff hiding behind fanciful bed rest prescriptions, which she said “will henceforth be thoroughly scrutinised by our company doctors”.

“Theft of equipment is on the rise and severe sanctions will be applied on anyone who is found guilty. The list of issues is long. Suffice it to remind each and every one of you that respect for rules and regulations is crucial to maintaining a professional, respectful and prosperous work environment,” she added.

She was categorical that: “We all have to make the commitment to cultivate a culture of responsibility and mutual respect, in which everyone feels valued and supported in their work. For this to happen, we have to adhere to company policies, respect established procedures, and treat colleagues with dignity and courtesy”.
