The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Ghana to Cameroon, Donald Akumbu Muffih, has officially taken up duty in Cameroon. He was tasked to strengthen relations between both countries and her peoples.

This was at the presentation of exequatur ceremony organised in Yaounde. The event which held at the CBC Resource Centre in Mvan was presided over by the Governor of the Centre Region, Naseri Paul Bea.

While handing over the designation document from the President of the Republic, Governor Naseri Bea tasked him to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Cameroon and the West African nation.

He also outlined the historic political, economic and socio-cultural ties between both countries. In addition, the Governor urged him to exercise his function with humility while encouraging dialogue and mutual respect.

He is expected to work in close collaboration with authorities in Yaounde while giving fresh impetus to relations between Ghana and Cameroon.

Makes assessments of state of relations

Speaking at the event, the Honorary Consul said relations between the two countries have come a long way since diplomatic ties were established in 1963. Over the past decades, he upheld that the two countries have shared common interests and aspirations on several bilateral and multilateral issues affecting the African continent and the wider global community.

"The opening of a Honorary Consulate of Ghana in Yaoundé this year is, therefore, testament of Ghana’s commitment to deepen bilateral relations and cooperation with the Republic of Cameroon to cover new frontiers for the mutual benefit of both countries," he said, adding that "these new frontiers, in Ghana’s view, include, inter alia, education, health, tourism, trade and investments, aviation and maritime transport, agriculture, and cultural exchanges".

While expressing thanks to the Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo Addo, for the confidence bestowed on him to represent Ghana in Cameroon, he equally pronounced appreciation to the President of Cameroon, for the official recognition.

Makes enticing pledges

Under the supervision of the Ghanaian Embassy in Malabo-Equatorial Guinea, the Honorary Consul has promised to work towards taking Ghana-Cameroon relations to a new pedestal.

"I believe in Ghana. To believe in Ghana is to promote and protect the interest of Ghana which include economic interest and safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians in Cameroon," he added.

He equally urged all Ghanaians residing in Cameroon to be law abiding and good emissaries of Ghana to help strengthen relations between Ghana and Cameroon. He also reminded them of the need to embrace today’s challenges as opportunities for a better tomorrow, to be proud of Ghana’s rich diverse culture, customs, traditions, and history, and to believe in Ghana’s economic capacity.

"I implore all Ghanaians living in Cameroon to redefine national responsibility with greater urgency so that the first decade of this Century will be remembered as the decade that dispelled all doubts about our capacity to run our own affairs and, while doing so, prosper,” he said.
