UBa intensifies preparations ahead of 2023 varsity games.

The University of Bamenda, UBa has in the past days, intensified preparations ahead of the 23rd edition of the all University Games.

The annual event will to be hosted by the University of Ngaoundere and will run from April 29 to May 6, 2023.

On the University of Bamenda campus, trainings are being carried out on daily basis in several disciplines, including football boys and girls, handball, volleyball, basketball, athletics and others.

The training sessions are being coordinated by coaches of the different disciplines under the supervision of Tama Wango, Head of Sports Division at the University of Bamenda.

In the discipline of football boys where a lot of attention is given, the defending champions are poised to retain the trophy in Ngaoundere.

The team is still in position of the trophy they won in Dschang in 2019, after defeating the University Institute of the Golf of Guinea, IUG at the final.

According to Anumewa Franklin, coach of the UBa football Boys team who successfully guarded them to victory in 2019, they are working hard on daily basis to retain the trophy.

He spoke to The Guardian Post Sports Thursday April 6, 2023 after his team played a 1-1 draw with Rangers FC Bafut in Bambili.

The tactician who is coach of elite one club, Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda has developed a strategy by playing friendly matches with elite clubs in the North West region, as a way to get his team ready for the games.

“I just want them to play against elite clubs so that by the time we are going for the university games, they will be mentally okay. We are not satisfied, we need to work hard because we are going in as defending champions. All our opponents will be coming ready. So we have to prepare more than before. If we come back with the trophy it will be good,” Anumewa Franklin said.

Questioned about the young squad which is quite different from those who won the trophy in Dschang in 2019, the coach said he has confidence in his players.

“We have a hungry new squad, who are eager to go and write their names in the university games. I have told them to work hard,” coach Anumewa added.

In order to boost the morale of the young players, some elite players who are students of the University of Bamenda have been called up in the team.

The UBa Boys football team has already engaged friendly matches with clubs like All Stars, Tubah United, Rangers FC Bafut, Rainbow FC and will also meet with Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda and others in the days ahead.

The female football team of UBa has also been training hard.

They have also met with clubs like Ita Mbong FC, as a way to get ready for the competition.

On the side of athletics, Coach Nyang Cynthia revealed that they are targeting goal medals.

She added that they are getting athletes ready for 100 and 400 meters for short distance race and 500 and 1000 for long distance race.

“For now we have all the athletes for the different categories. I think they are ready, we will give in our best. We are targeting the goal medal, though there may be people who will be tougher than us, but we promised to come back with the best,” Nyang Cynthia said.

All the training sessions are being graced by the presence of UBa fan club.
