Yaounde: GBTHS Nsam students ransack campus over mate’s death.

Students gather in front of GBTHS Nsam this October 21, after incident disrupted classes

Students of Government Bilingual Technical High School, GBTHS Nsam, in Yaounde, in the Centre Region, yesterday went on the rampage, vandalising school facilities. This followed the death of a fellow student in a road accident.

The accident, involving three students of the school, occurred during the early hours of yesterday, October 21.

It triggered violent protests on campus as students expressed anger over the death of their schoolmate.

Viral social media videos following the incident, captured students accusing the school administration of contributing to the circumstances surrounding the death of their mate.

An unidentified student alleged that the deceased had been asked to leave the school to get a haircut, despite reportedly pleading to remain on campus because his home was far away.

The student claimed the accident occurred while the deceased was returning to school on a commercial bike after the haircut.

The disorder reportedly left newly installed glass windows shattered and doors damaged. The chaos forced the suspension of classes.

According to a report by State broadcaster, CRTV, the protesting students damaged school infrastructure, smashed windows and targeted the Principal’s vehicle. Security forces deployed to restore order were also confronted by the protesting students.

The Divisional Officer, DO, for Yaounde III Subdivision, Serge Hervé Biwolé Sal, descended to the scene to restore calm following the disorder.

The DO explained that three students, all in Form One F, were heading to school on a motorcycle when they lost control and fell.

“One of the vehicles travelling behind them subsequently hit them. One died on the spot, and we ordered that the body be taken to the mortuary while efforts are made to identify the parents,” the DO explained.

The administrator added that the “second student was rushed to the Efoulan District Hospital” for medical attention. He said fortunately, the victim “did not sustain any major physical injuries”.

Biwolé Sal added that the third student, who was riding the motorcycle, escaped unhurt.

According to the DO, several students were apprehended following the violence. He disclosed that some were found in possession of unusual objects.

The DO said security forces would investigate if the students involved were intoxicated or outsiders had infiltrated the institution to perpetrate the violence.

He revealed that authorities subsequently succeeded to restore calm at the institution.
