Cameroon’s fastest growing microfinance institution, Mmockmbie Cooperative Credit Union, MmoCCUL, is on the honours roll again for its landmark strides and contributions to the growth of the country’s microfinance sector.

The microfinance institution, which was on September 19, 2026, presented the prize of “Most Interest-Yielding Microfinance Institution,” has been at the forefront of several digital innovations and other pioneering initiatives, including the payment of 5% interest on savings to its members twice a year.

Singled out by the Cameroon English Language Newspaper Publishers Association, CENPA, during the body’s annual award ceremony, held in Douala last Saturday, MmoCCUL, was celebrated for its pacesetting role in the industry.

The jury of the prestigious award particularly praised MmoCCUL “For being the first and only microfinance institution in the entire CEMAC subregion that pays bi-annual 5% interest on savings.”

The Credit Union, which has witnessed rapid growth and expansion within a decade, was also thrown flowers for the being the country’s fastest-growing, dynamic and most reliable microfinance institution.

In an acceptance speech shortly after receiving the honour in Douala, the General Manager of Mmockmbie Credit Union, Ngezem Fortsomo Skyly, said the Douala distinction was yet another motivation for his Credit Union to do more for its members.

While expressing gratitude to CENPA for the distinction, Ngezem said he was dedicating the award “…to our valued members…and of course, we can’t forget our committed staff who work and night to satisfy these members. We also dedicate this award to our visionary and valued board members.”

Members our priority

Meanwhile, speaking further, the MmoCCUL General Manager explained that the rationale behind the payment of interest on savings twice a year, is part of the credit union’s efforts to reward the trust and loyalty of its members.

“The motivation behind this action of paying interest on savings twice a year is part of our efforts to satisfy our members. It is our own way of appreciating our valued members who have been standing by us,” he said.

He then boasted that: “As at today, Mmockmbie Credit Union is the only credit union that has developed a merchant code where members can save their money directly into their accounts without any back up staff interfering. This has helped our members to save regularly”.

Limbe, Akwa-Douala branches soon

The General Manager of MmoCCUL also disclosed that plans are afoot for the creation of a branch in Limbe and another in Akwa, Douala. He said the actions are part of efforts to take MmoCCUL services closer to its members.

“We all know how strategic Limbe is in the South West Region. We can call it the heartbeat of the region. Taking into consideration the fact that we have a very good number of members in Limbe, we think it is time we open a branch there,” he said.

Turning to other issues, Ngezem Skyly announced the imminent launch of the Microfinance institution’s Damas branch and operational head office in Yaounde. He said the giant structure will be launched in November this year.

Ngezem said the launch of the imposing multimillion building will coincide with the 10th anniversary celebration of the Credit Union.

“It will be an opportunity for us to celebrate our 10th anniversary given that the credit union started in 2016. We will also launch our union clothe and our online products,” he announced, noting that: “It is true that so many microfinance institutions have online services but Mmockmbie credit union is an accredited GIMAC member. Once you become a GIMAC, it means you can transfer money for example from your Afriland First Bank account to Mmockmbie account or from Mmockmbie to your NFC account directly.”

Enviable balance sheet

The Mmockmbie Credit Union currently boasts of an enviable balance sheet of over 9 billion FCFA.

Skyly Ngezem recalled that: “In 2020, our balance sheet was 200 million but as at today, we are 9billion plus and we are confident that before the end of the year, we will clock 10 billion balance sheet.”

He said the institution’s membership as at today stands at about 20,000.

“It is important to note that just this year, we have created over 4,500 accounts. We are very confident that we will go above 6,000 accounts before the end of the year. The union currently has 13 branches in just ten years and next year, two branches are coming to make it 15. So, the union is growing steadily,” he concluded.

Award consolidation of market position

According to organisers of the CENPA award, MmoCCUL's Douala distinction celebrates the microfinance institution’s meteoric rise as an absolute powerhouse in Cameroon's financial sector.

Through a relentless, everyday commitment to service excellence, MmoCCUL has successfully demystified financial access.

The Menji-headquartered credit union has completely transformed from a local community entity into a dominant national force that empowers small entrepreneurs, hardworking families, and grassroots developers across the territory.

By consistently offering innovative, reliable, and user-centric financial solutions, the credit union has broken down old barriers.

It provides mouthwatering interest rates on savings and highly attractive rates on loans, effectively bridging the gap for the underserved population and breathing new life into local economies.

For a long time, traditional banking in Cameroon has been weighed down by rigid bureaucratic hurdles that stifle local growth.

MmoCCUL completely shattered this old model by introducing flexible withdrawal options, easy account opening, and tailored micro-loans specifically designed for everyday civil servants, small-scale contractors, and local farmers.

The Most Interest-Yielding Microfinance Institution award highlights a deeper reality that MmoCCUL does not see its clients as mere account numbers, but as vital partners in building shared wealth.

Whether serving a rural farmer or an urban entrepreneur, the Credit Union has established a gold standard for banking care, turning service quality into its strongest pillar of corporate growth.

Rapid expansion…

MmoCCUL’s commitment to premium customer service was recently made visible through the strategic relocation and revamping of its vital Messassi branch in the nation’s capital, Yaoundé and the opening of a new branch in Kribi.

To comfortably serve thousands of rapidly growing members, Ngezem announced the relocation of the branch to a much more spacious and strategic facility.

The branch is now located at the Dispensaire Messassi, precisely 20 meters before the Neptune petrol station on the highway leading directly to Olembe.

This "marketing imposing" location was carefully chosen to dominate a high-traffic corridor and provide world-class access and banking convenience for members living in Santa Barbara and surrounding neighborhoods.

Simultaneously, the credit union has pushed forward with major infrastructural developments, including the completion of its modern architectural head office building in the Damas neighbourhood in Yaounde. It is designed to deliver elite banking services.
