Douala: Melbet Cameroun honours, supports meritorious varsity students.

A ceremony to this effect held in Douala on Thursday, September 3, 2026. It held under the theme: “Celebrating Merit, Ambition and Youth; Melbet Celebrates Excellence”.

The initiative forms part of Melbet Cameroun’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy to support young people and encourage them to pursue academic and professional excellence.

Three-City tour to support university students

The Douala event follows the programme’s launch in Yaounde on Wednesday, September 2. The next lap of the donation will be in Bafoussam in the West Region. 

The initiative, in its first edition, is supporting a total of 40 selected student scholars, drawn from various academic disciplines, including communication, marketing, technology and the sciences.

The beneficiaries are being recognised under three categories: Excellence Awards, which honour students with outstanding academic results; Merit Awards, which recognise consistent academic performance throughout their university studies; and Future Leader Awards, which celebrates young people demonstrating ambition, civic engagement and positive impact within their communities.

Beyond recognition, the selected students receive financial assistance intended to help with university fees and educational supplies. Each beneficiary was also handed a dedicated university kit and an official certificate from Melbet Cameroun.

Speaking during the event in Douala, the Head of Marketing at Melbet Cameroun, Pierre Belinga, said the initiative was designed not only to motivate students but also to contribute to a culture of academic discipline and responsible financial management.

“This programme is a motivation, not just for the students but for the school,” she stated, adding that: “It is our way of pushing students to work hard and also teaching them financial discipline”. 

Students express gratitude to Melbet Cameroun

Beneficiaries said the gesture comes as both an encouragement and practical support at a time when the cost of higher education continues to place pressure on many families. 

One of the beneficiaries, Mama Ossengue, a university student, expressed her appreciation after receiving the support.

“I am so happy because I feel honoured. Among hundreds of candidates, I was selected to benefit from this support by Melbet, and I want to say thank you to them. Studying at private universities in Cameroon is very expensive, and this support from the group will go a long way in helping me,” Ossengue said.

Parents of beneficiaries who attended the event also saluted the betting company for the initiative. They described it as a meaningful intervention that could ease some of the financial pressure associated with university education.

A parent, Moulema Mbia Violette Vicky, said the assistance comes timely and would help reduce her financial burden and allow her to redirect resources towards other members of the family.

“This is a great gesture. It will ease my load for this year and enable me to pay more attention to my child’s siblings,” she said.

With the gift from the company, Moulema Mbia said she will push her son to “work hard and succeed as a way of telling Melbet that they did something good”. 

Tour heads to Bafoussam

With the Douala leg of the academic recognition tour completed, Melbet Cameroun is expected to continue to Bafoussam, the final stop on the three-city programme.

Through the initiative, the company says it seeks to contribute to the development of a generation of young Cameroonian scholars equipped with academic excellence, technical skills, leadership qualities and greater prospects for future employability.
