Douala: Roots & Suits Empower Foundation steps up tree planting.

Officials said the goal remains to boost environmental sustainability across Cameroon.

At the end of the latest campaign, officials said 500 trees were planted along the Rond-Poulin to the Carrefour Bassong stretch in the Douala V municipality. They noted that, the campaign is part of its ambitious target to plant 20,000 trees by 2027. 

The Executive Director of the organization, Linda Tatabod, noted that “more than 6,000 trees have already been planted over the past two years, reflecting steady progress toward the overall goal”. 

She added that: “For 2026 alone, the target has been significantly raised to 10,000 trees, signaling an intensified push to accelerate the project's impact within a shorter timeframe”.

The tree-planting exercise drew together a broad coalition of partners central to the project's implementation. Among those present were representatives from Olam Agri, small and medium-sized enterprises, the Douala City Council, and the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife.

Speaking at the event, project partners emphasized that the campaign represents more than a simple environmental gesture. They described it as a long-term investment for future generations and a concrete response to the escalating challenges posed by climate change.

In Douala, they said the trees will help in the face of rising temperatures and worsening pollution levels. Olam Agri officials noted that addressing environmental degradation remains a collective responsibility. 

A spokesperson of the organisation, Ashu MA-Mbeng Success Epse Tchoumi, called on everyday citizens to actively embrace sustainability practices. He noted that the fight against climate change cannot be left to a handful of stakeholders alone.

According to a 2024 report by the International Monetary Fund eLibary, “climate change is an imminent threat to the people and the economy of Cameroon and it is expected to result in significant output losses, exacerbate poverty and inequality, food insecurity and conflict risk, leading to increased population displacement”.
