Elite One: Colombe, Dynamo pile pressure on leaders, Unisport.

The matches counting for matchday 23 of the first division took place on Sunday June 7 across the national territory. 

Unisport maintained their three-points lead at the top of the table after securing a 2-1 comeback win against relegation threatened Stade Renard of Melong. 

The host went in front through Houbed Ngoube in the sixth minute of play but Unisport avoided defeat with two late second half goals. 

Divine Tchamneni restored parity on 80 minutes before Junior Tang netted the winner with six minutes remaining. 

Unsiport will be crowned champions of the MTN Elite One Championship by the end of the month if they win their remaining three matches. 

They have a tough task when they travel North to take on Coton Sport and Gazelle FA in their final away matches this season. Their last match of the season is against Dynamo of Douala on June 28. 

Unisport won their maiden league title in 1996 and are on course to ending their drought this year. 

Title race heats up

Dynamo of Douala remained in firm contention in the title race after a hard-fought 2-1 win over record league winners Coton Sport of Garoua. 

The host had to come from behind to secure the vital win. Dynamo’s lethal striker and skipper cancelled Carlos Yougouda's first half opener while Jefter Arrey completed the comeback in the stroke of halftime. 

The win means Dynamo of Douala remained third on the table level on points from second placed Colombe Sportive and three points behind Unisport. 

Dynamo will be hoping to win their remaining three matches and hope to see other title aspirants drop points in the race. 

They will host Panthere Sportive of the Nde on June 14 in their last home match of the season, and will complete their season with trips to PWD of Bamenda and Unisport. 

The team, which has won the Elite One title three times in 1979, 1981 and 1998, eye a fourth crown and first league success in close to three decades. 

The defeat, on the other hand, dealt a devastating blow to Coton Sport and ended their title ambitions. Their hopes of reclaiming the title is officially over as they can no longer mathematically finish top. 

Coton Sport is fourth with 39 points and with three matches left to the end of the season, it is impossible to equal Unisport’s 49 points atop the table. 

Colombe on course to retain crown

Colombe Sportive of the Dja and Lobo took a massive stride towards winning the MTN Elite One title for the second time in a row with a vital 1-0 win over Canon Sportive of Yaounde. 

Patrick Edzibbi scored a brilliant first half free-kick to help Colombe Sportive to a sixth successive win in a row to continue the chase. 

Colombe Sportive remained second of the table with 46 points, only three of leaders Unisport. If Colombe Sportive wins their next game against PWD of Bamenda on June 14 and Unisport drops points, the South Region football team will go top on goal difference. 

The defending champions also face Aigle Royal of the Moungo in their penultimate group game and Fauve Azur in their final fixture of the season. 

 Contrasting fortunes for NW, SW clubs 

Clubs of the North West and South West Regions suffered contrasting fortunes in the championship over the weekend. 

PWD of Bamenda came from behind to draw 1-1 against relegation-battling AS Fortuna at the Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium. 

Asaah Solomon put AS Fortuna on course for a vital win in the relegation battle but PWD of Bamenda snatched a draw after Junior Nguimbat held his nerves to convert from the spot on 77 minutes. 

The stalemate extended the team’s winless run to three matches with two draws and a loss. However, they remained fifth with 34 points.

As Fortuna hopes of boosting their survival were dealt a devastating blow. 

They remain bottom of the table with 15 points. They will need something extra to escape their perilous situation. 

They are only one point above South West Region club Victoria United FC. The Limbe based outfit held to clinch a 2-1 win at Panthere Sportive of Nde at the Fotso Victor Stadium. 

Nko Ghangle Rattensi and Faustin Ambassa were on target for the Limbe based outfit while Cyprien Saha halved the deficit for Panthere. 

Elsewhere, Aigle Royal of the Menoua narrowly edged Gazelle FA 1-0. Mistro Yamdjeu needed just eight minutes to score the winner.
