At meeting in Yaounde: Moroccan envoy, National Assembly Speaker recommit to strengthen parliamentary ties.

The commitment was made on June 5, in Yaounde during a meeting between the House Speaker and the Moroccan Diplomat.

During the meeting, Ambassador El Jamoussi highlighted the longstanding friendship between Morocco and Cameroon and reiterated his determination to consolidate those ties during his tenure. He also emphasised Morocco’s readiness to expand cooperation in sectors of mutual interest and share its development experience.

The diplomat delivered a formal invitation from the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Morocco, Rachid Talbi Alami, inviting the Speaker of the National Assembly to undertake an official visit to Morocco. The proposed visit is aimed at further strengthening inter-parliamentary relations between the two legislative institutions.

Speaking to reporters after the audience, Ambassador El Jamoussi explained that the meeting was a courtesy visit following the House Speaker’s recent appointment. 

He said discussions focused on ways of elevating cooperation between the two countries. According to the Ambassador, Morocco’s presence in the country is visible across several sectors and both sides remain committed to taking relations to a higher level.

“Parliaments are the legislative bodies of countries. They reflect the soul of the people and legislate for the aspirations of the people. We discussed parliamentary relations and how we can make them even stronger through greater cooperation,” Ambassador El Jamoussi said.

He added that, “as I observed during the two months since my arrival, I found that Morocco has a strong presence here, and the will to strengthen this relationship exists at all levels; economic, political and developmental”. 

The ambassador also announced that a delegation of parliamentarians will travel to Morocco in the days ahead. According to him, the visit will provide an opportunity to exchange parliamentary best practices and explore new areas of cooperation.

The Speaker, the Rt. Hon. Théodore Datouo, welcomed the ambassador and described relations between the two countries as exemplary. He noted that both nations share a common vision for African development and stability and expressed his commitment to strengthening parliamentary diplomacy as an important component of broader bilateral relations.
