Kamto preaches peace as nation celebrates National Day.

The appeal was made as the country observed the 54th edition of the National Day under the theme: “National unity: Backbone of our defence system, bedrock of Cameroon’s development”.

In his tweet, Prof Maurice Kamto described Cameroon as a land of “faith and promise”.

He urged Cameroonians to work together towards building a strong country, more united in solidarity and committed to shared prosperity.

“Our people, united in their rich diversity, are, despite our quarrels, bound together by a shared history of struggle and hardship,” Kamto tweeted.

He added that: “Let us not deceive ourselves: if even one of our communities were to disappear, the others would be inconsolable, if only because they would no longer have anyone upon whom to vent their frustration”. 

Reactions galore as nation fetes

Meanwhile, there have been several reactions across the board as Cameroon celebrated the National Day.

The African Development Bank, AfDB, which has been a strategic partner of Cameroon wrote: “On the occasion of Cameroon’s 58th National Unity Day, the AfDB Group extends its warmest congratulations to the government and people of Cameroon”.

The High Commission of Canada to Cameroon congratulated Cameroon with “warm wishes of peace, inclusive growth and prosperity to all Cameroonians.”

Local Youth Corner, LOYOC, on its part, underscored the need for unity. LOYOC also “reaffirms its commitment to building peace and empowering youth across all ten regions. Together, we rise.”

Churchill Ewumbue-Monono, Cameroon’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, AU, paid tributes to the country’s unity, resilience, and shared commitment to peace, progress and national development.

“Together, let us continue building a stronger and more prosperous Cameroon,” Ewumbue-Monono added.

The Member of Parliament, MP, for Ndu/Nkambe Constituency, Hon Ta Nformi Ngala Gerald, also wrote: “Our diversity represents our unique strengths. Together, we build a stronger defence against threats. Together, we create the foundations for genuine development that lifts us all”.
