At pontifical mass in Douala: Pope Leo calls for compassion, sharing, social justice.

The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has called on Christians and the global community to embrace compassion, share resources, and respond actively to human suffering.

Speaking during a pontifical high mass at the esplanade of the Japoma Stadium in Douala on Friday, April 17, the Supreme Pontiff emphasised the importance of both physical and spiritual nourishment, urging believers not to ignore those in need.

He highlighted that while food sustains the body, humanity must also provide what he described as “the nourishment of the soul”, rooted in love, charity, and faith.

“The world is filled with suffering and darkness,” the Pope said, noting that many people continue to endure hardship, poverty, and exclusion.

He stressed that faith communities must not remain indifferent, but instead act as sources of light and hope.

The Pope said the mission of the Church goes beyond rituals and must translate into concrete acts of solidarity.

Drawing from biblical teachings, the Pope described Jesus Christ as the central source of spiritual nourishment, present among believers and offering transformation.

He explained that faith is not simply about remembering sacred events of the past, but about living a present and active relationship that inspires change and strengthens individuals to face life’s challenges.

Additionally, he also used the symbolism of the shared table to illustrate unity and hope. He described it as a place where believers gather not only to celebrate faith but also to renew their commitment to helping others.

In his message, this “table of hope” becomes a call to action, especially in times marked by trials and uncertainty.

It should be noted that a key theme of his sermon was the responsibility of individuals to care for others, particularly the most vulnerable.

He warned against complacency, reminding worshippers that love often requires sacrifice and effort, both internally and externally.

“True love is not always easy,” he noted, acknowledging that acts of charity can come with difficulties.

However, he insisted that the said challenges should not discourage believers, but rather strengthen their resolve to act with kindness and generosity.

The Pontiff also seized the opportunity to encourage people to look beyond their own needs and recognize the struggles of others.

He called for a renewed sense of fraternity, where resources are shared instead of hoarded, and where human dignity is upheld above all else.

His message resonated with the thousands who answered present, as they celebrated, chanting hymns echoed by religious groups.
