The late Chris Mbunwe: The Champion Publisher; formerly of The Post

The ink in the pen of veteran print media journalist, Chris Mbunwe, has stopped flowing. The man who mostly practiced across the North West Region, with base in Bamenda, journeyed to the yonder, April 12, 2026.

The late Chris Mbunwe, who, until Sunday, had been battling ill health, is said to have slumped at home , and was rushed to a health facility in Bamenda.

Family sources say he was pronounced dead by medics, on arrival at the health facility.

We gathered that he had regained form of late, and looking hale and hearty. Friends have even testified that they exchanged lengthily with him, in the early hours of yesterday.

We further gathered that it was at about 3:30pm yesterday, that a social group to which he was a member, met at his residence, for their monthly meeting. He is said to have gone to his room to dress up for the meeting. Minutes later, we were told, he called the wife to come help him put on his trouser- a strange development. Sources have it that it was in the course of dressing him up that he collapsed. He was immediately rushed to a health facility, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He worked for decades with Buea-based bi-weekly, The Post newspaper. The deceased journalist made a name for himself, rising through the ranks to manage the operations of The Post newspaper across the North West Region, serving as its Bureau Chief.

He later moved on to establish the weekly publication, The Champion, which he launched in the later part of 2025.

Beyond journalism, the late Chris Mbunwe tried his luck in politics. He was a staunched member of the opposition Social Democratic Front, SDF.

In 2013, he was among party supporters on the SDF list for the municipal election in Nkambe. Then, it had become common knowledge that he was the mayor in waiting, if the SDF had won the election that year.

The deceased also rose within the ranks in the SDF, serving at one time as the Regional Communication Secretary of the party in the North West Region.

The native of Tabenkeng village, Nkambe Central Subdivision, Donga Mantung Division, also at one time headed the Wimbum Cultural and Development Association, WICUDA, Bamenda branch.

He is the third journalist to bid goodbye to the world beyond, in Bamenda, in the last three months.

Others who dropped their pens before him were; Priscillia Nenge and Wambo Emmanuel.

The late Chris Mbunwe’s corpse has been deposited in a mortuary in Bamenda, pending funeral arrangements.
