Yaounde: MAETUR, housing ministry seal 10-hectare land deal for medical centre hub.

The Urban and Rural Land Development Authority, known by its Frech acronym, MAETUR, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, MINHDU, have signed a convention to allocate and develop land for the future African Medical Centre of Excellence, AMCE, and its associated residential complex along the Yaounde-Nsimalen motorway.

The agreement was signed recently in Yaounde during a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Dr Chief Joseph Dion Ngute, as well as several cabinet members, including the Minister of State Property, Surveys and Land Tenure, Henri Eyebe Ayissi; and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe.

According to information made public by MINDHU, the deal sets out the provision of a 10-hectare site and its full development to host the medical facility promoted by the African Export-Import Bank, Afreximbank.

Under the terms of the convention, MINHDU and MAETUR will ensure the availability and preparation of the land, marking a key stage in the rollout of major state-backed projects aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and addressing housing needs.

MINHDU revealed that the initiative forms part of government directives focused on improving access to modern health services and reducing the housing deficit through planned urban expansion.

Officials stated that the project combines both health and urban development objectives, integrating a high-level medical facility with residential and service infrastructure.

The African Medical Centre of Excellence is expected to complement ongoing efforts to upgrade the national healthcare system, while the adjoining property development aligns with policies promoting structured urban growth and access to decent housing.

The project is being implemented in partnership with Afreximbank, whose President, Dr George Elombi, attended the signing ceremony.

According to MINHDU, the collaboration forms part of a broader urban development plan linked to the Yaoundé ring road expansion, structured around four development zones intended to support new residential, service and economic hubs.

Authorities indicated that beyond the construction of a hospital, the development is designed to contribute to urban restructuring, job creation and improved living conditions.

The integration of housing, public services and healthcare facilities is expected to support a coordinated and functional urban environment along the Yaounde-Nsimalen corridor.

Both MINHDU and MAETUR affirmed their central role in driving national housing and urban development policy, and reiterated the government's commitment to delivering major structural projects in service of the country's development goals and its emergence as a modern nation. No timeline for construction or opening was announced at the ceremony.
