MIDENO launches farming season with priority on coffee sector.

The 2026 farming season in the North West Region has officially been launched with a focus on revitalising the coffee sector and strengthening food security for farming communities.

The ceremony, organised by the North West Development Authority, MIDENO, took place on Friday March 13, 2026 in Bamenda.

It was presided over by the Governor of the Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele Lafrique. Also present was the Director General of MIDENO, Cletus Anye Matoyah, representatives from partner institutions and cooperatives.

Speaking during the ceremony, MIDENO Director General, Cletus Anye Matoyah, said the institution remains committed to strengthening agricultural productivity and improving rural livelihoods despite the Region’s challenging socio-economic context.

For the 2026 farming season, MIDENO announced the distribution of key agricultural inputs aimed particularly at revitalising coffee production. These include 1,600 bags of bio-complex fertilizer for organised coffee farmers.

“Coffee is a sector that we're trying to revamp, and we started with a lot of training with all the actors last year. We have been accompanying farmers in the various crops. But this time around we laid a lot of emphasis on coffee. You want to believe with us, the value of coffee is coming up more and more, at the local and international market,” Anye Matoyah said.

Apart from the donation to the coffee farmers, MIDENO also gave out 15 tons of improved maize seeds, three tons of high-iron bean seeds, 560 tins of carrot seeds and 10,000 plantain plantlets.

According to MIDENO officials, the plantain plantlets and carrot seeds will encourage intercropping systems within coffee farms, allowing farmers to diversify their income while improving food security.

The Director of Technical Services at MIDENO, Ndeh Emmanuel, said a monitoring and evaluation system has been established to track the distribution of inputs and measure their impact on production and farmer incomes across the Region.

On his part, Governor Adolphe Lele praised farmers in the Region for their resilience despite years of socio-economic disruption and called on beneficiaries to make effective use of the support provided.

“Agriculture remains the backbone of our regional economy. This initiative demonstrates government’s determination to improve productivity, enhance food security and strengthen farmer cooperatives,” Governor Lele said.

The Governor also encouraged youth and women to explore opportunities within the agricultural value chain, describing agriculture as a pathway to enterprise, innovation and economic empowerment.

2025 highlights

In his speech, the Director of MIDENO highlighted the impact of the Cameroon Emergency Project to Combat Foot Crisis, PULCCA, which has helped expand access to farm inputs and equipment for thousands of farmers across the Region.

He revealed that between 2024 and 2025, over 24,700 farmers benefited from input support, compared to an initial target of 10,700 farmers. He noted that the support covered key value chains, including maize, cassava, rice, plantain, potatoes and market gardening.

The programme also provided equipment such as power tillers, hand carts and knapsack sprayers to more than 9,000 farmers while over 14,000 others received training on climate-smart agriculture, safe agrochemical use and post-harvest management.
