Indomitable Lions: Gov’t orders payment of AFCON quarterfinals qualification bonuses.

Government has ordered the payment of over 509million FCFA to the senior men’s national football team as bonuses for qualifying for the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Prof Narcisse Mouelle Kombi made the announcement yesterday.

This was shortly after the Indomitable Lions humbled the Bafana Bafana of South Africa 2-1 in the round of 16 last Sunday.

Per the member of government, each of the 28 Indomitable Lions players will receive a sum of 18 million, 180 thousand FCFA for the bonuses, amounting to a total of over 509million FCFA.

“As a way of additional encouragement and motivation, the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, on behalf of the state, has just ordered the payment of their qualification and victory bonuses, a cumulative amount of 18,180,000 per player,” the Sports minister stated in a post on his official Facebook page where he also congratulated the team for the victory.

The announced step to pay the bonuses has been positively received by Cameroonians who have described the move as a decisive action geared toward pushing the Indomitable Lions to attaining their objective of emerging champions at the end of the ongoing showpiece on January 18.

The recent bonuses take the overall total of money that the five-time African champions have so far received for their participation in the Morocco tournament to over one billion FCFA, per sources.

Before the most recent package of over 509million FCFA package, it is reported that the government had earlier ordered the payment of 854 million FCFA for the player’s appearance fees which principally include the player’s compensation fee for participating in the tournament.

Each of the 28 players received 30 million, 500 thousand FCFA for the appearance fee amounting to the cumulative sum of 854 million FCFA, according to the sources.

Cameroon is unbeaten in four matches since the ongoing tournament got underway on December 21.

The team is on a run of three victories and a draw after brilliant performances against defending champions, Cote d’Ivoire, 1996 winners, South Africa, and the pair of Mozambique and Gabon.

The selection staged a 1-1 draw with Cote d’Ivoire in the group stage but outsmarted Gabon and Mozambique to comfortably qualify for the round of 16 stages where the team dominantly knocked out South Africa on Sunday night.

The Indomitable Lions who are aiming to bag their sixth continental title as their continue their years-long bid to topple the Pharaohs of Egypt as the undisputed kings of the AFCON, will face familiar foes Morocco in the quarterfinal at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Friday January 9.

The Atlas Lions qualified after defeating Tanzania 1nil on Sunday in the round of 16 series.

The North Africans whose last AFCON triumph dates back to 1976, also have a record of three wins and a draw in the ongoing tournament.
