Ngaoundere: Prudential Beneficial, Roots & Suits Empower stage cancer awareness campaign.

Participants during awareness campaign

Leading insurance company, Prudential Beneficial, and partner, Roots & Suits Empower, have staged a four-day Health and Wellness Campaign in the town of Ngaoundere, Adamawa Region of the country.

The campaign aimed at improving cancer awareness, early detection, and nutrition education successfully mobilised more than 2,000 residents of the Dang community and the broader Ngaoundéré III subdivision.

The initiative, which initially targeted 500 community members, far exceeded expectations as local authorities, medical experts, civil society groups, and residents united to promote tailored healthcare solutions for breast and prostate cancer patients and survivors.

Held from November 25-28, the programme combined physical activity, medical sensitisation, free cancer screening, and hands-on nutrition training. The initiative was Sponsored by Prudential Beneficial Insurance Cameroon, and coordinated by the non-profit organization, Roots and Suits Empower.

The Marketing and Communications Director of Prudential Beneficial Insurance, Mboli Fisla, and the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of Roots and Suits Empower, Linda Tatabod Elimbi Elokan, both described the turnout as “overwhelming and encouraging,” emphasising that the impressive participation underscored a growing community commitment to health education and preventive care.

Engaging start with sports walk…

Activities kicked off on November 25 with a community sports walk through the Dang neighborhood of the Ngaoundéré III subdivision, of the Vina Division, drawing men, women, and young people who joined the initiative to promote healthy living habits.

The walk served as a symbolic call to action, encouraging residents to take ownership of their well-being while also standing in solidarity with individuals affected by cancer.

The campaign was formally launched during an opening ceremony presided over by the Secretary General of Ngaoundere III Council, Ibrahima Nana, representing the Mayor of Ngaoundéré III. The official had commended the organisers for prioritising community health.

In his remarks, the mayor’s representative stressed the importance of early cancer detection and sustained sensitisation, noting that many lives can be saved through timely knowledge and proper medical follow-up.

The opening day also featured extensive health sensitisation sessions led by medical specialists and a nutritionist. Using posters, visual aids, and interactive discussions, experts educated the population on the risks, symptoms, and management of breast and prostate cancers.

Participants learned about preventive lifestyle choices and the importance of regular screenings, as well as the crucial role proper nutrition plays during and after cancer treatment.

Free screening enhances early detection

On November 26, the focus shifted to direct medical support as the Dang District Hospital hosted free breast and prostate cancer consultations and screening.

Officials say the initiative forms part of a broader screening campaign that will run until the end of 2025. Residents welcomed the free consultations, acknowledging that cost remains a major barrier to accessing specialised healthcare services.

Medical teams conducted examinations, offered counselling, and referred individuals requiring follow-up care. Health workers described the turnout as particularly strong, highlighting the need for continuous outreach to reduce late cancer diagnoses in the region.

Worth noting, Prudential Beneficial Insurance, has gone beyond screening to providing full medical coverage for two suspected breast and prostate cases.

Speaking on the company's commitment to promoting health and wellness, Fisla Mboli, the Marketing Director of Prudential Beneficial Insurance, representing the company's Top Management, said: "At Prudential Beneficial Insurance, our commitment to promoting health and wellness goes beyond business”.

He added that, “it is our duty to help build stronger, healthier communities. When people thrive, families prosper and our nation moves forward. That is the future we are investing in”.

Empowering communities through nutrition training

Recognising the pivotal role diet plays in recovery and long-term health, the programme dedicated the 27th and 28th of November to practical nutrition training sessions.

More than 100 men and women received hands-on guidance in preparing natural fruit juices and vegetable-based dishes suitable for cancer patients, survivors, and households seeking healthier eating habits.

Trainers emphasised the value of nutrient-rich diets, local produce, and safe food preparation methods, with participants expressing appreciation for the practical nature of the sessions, noting that they now feel equipped to support their families and loved ones battling cancer.

Certificates awarded to trainees

The campaign’s closing day on November 28, culminated with the award of training certificates. The ceremony was presided over by the representatives of the DO of Ngaoundere III and Regional Delegate of the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Family MINPROFF, for the Adamawa Region.

Both officials applauded the organisers for empowering community members with life-saving knowledge and practical skills.

They highlighted the critical role of inclusive training programmes in improving public health outcomes and called for similar initiatives to be extended to other communities in the region.

In response to the call, the organisers reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining outreach efforts and partnering with local institutions to ensure that early detection, proper treatment, and healthy nutrition become a community norm.
