On working visit: PM says Biya personally interested in reconstruction of SONARA.

The Prime Minister, Head of Government, Dr Chief Joseph Dion Ngute, has disclosed that President Biya is personally interested in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the National Oil Refinery Company, SONARA. The PM made the disclosure during a visit to the refinery in Limbe.



Addressing guests during his visit to the facility on October 9, the PM said SONARA is a strategic company in Cameroon in terms of refining oil, but six years since the fire disaster, production seized. 

He saluted management for taking the initiative to ensure the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the facilities destroyed.

Dion Ngute he pledged government’s continued support and guidance to ensure that the company returns to production within the 24 months set out in the reconstruction plan. 

He stressed that the government has invested in salvaging SONARA after the fire incident. He said this visible in the institution of 47 francs per liter of fuel to help the company.

“More than six years since the fire incident, the government has sustained the company because it is a strategic institution…it deals with the provision of energy for Cameroon and countries of the Central African subregion and the ballooning cost of sustaining the increased prize of fuel,” he said.

After listening to presentation on reconstruction project, PARRAS24 and the level of progress of the works, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that the project will deliver within the timespan allocated. 

“I am happy with this project, which will ensure the company restarts production in 24 months. It is vital that it restarts production so that the burden on the taxpayers can be removed and to serve the local and regional consumers,” he said.

The reconstruction and rehabilitation work started on September 15, 2025 with in-depth inspections by experts. The current phase involves about thirty companies with more than a hundred experts in different professions.
