A group of unruly youth, suspected to be supporters of the presidential candidate of the Cameroon National Salvation Front, FSNC, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, on Sunday, October 5, 2025, ambushed a campaign caravan of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM, in the city of Douala.

The campaign caravan, organised by CPDM frontline supporters in Douala; including the Fon of Koshin village, HRM Ju Wilson and Hon Ngala Gerard, was attacked in the Bonaberi neighbourhood.

The caravan was staged as part of a campaign rally organised to mobilise Anglophones, resident in Douala, to vote for Biya at Sunday’s presidential election.

The attackers, dressed in the official party fabric of the FSNC, were onboard tricycles and motorbikes. They intercepted the caravan in Bonaberi before attacking occupants on board the over 21 vehicles.

Fon Ju Wilson, who confirmed the attack to The Guardian Post yesterday, said his vehicle was attacked with the windscreen and side mirrors destroyed in the process.

The traditional ruler said other campaign gadgets of the CPDM, including the party’s official fabric and posters, were destroyed by the marauding crowd.

The traditional ruler and businessman recounted that: “The President of the special campaign team for Wouri, Dr Roger Mbassa Ndine, came to visit Anglophones on Sunday. During the rally, we decided to organise a caravan. In the course of the caravan, we were attacked by supporters of Candidate Issa Tchiroma. We were attacked around Bonaberi. They destroyed my driving mirrors and windscreen. About seven cars in the caravan were attacked. They also destroyed the campaign fabric and posters of the CPDM. They were dressed in the T-shirts of the FSNC and were onboard tricycles”.

The monarch, who is also a frontline supporter of the CPDM, disclosed that: “We decided not to retaliate. Our supporters were about retaliating, but I intervened and stopped them from doing so. We were with over 700 bike riders in the caravan. Tchiroma’s supporters were more than 1,000”.

Videos and still pictures seen by The Guardian Post, portray the gravity of the attack. While no human casualty was recorded, the attack caused enormous material loss.

Smooth campaign rally after all

Sunday’s attack came on the sidelines of a rally, organised to mobilise Anglophones in Douala to vote for Biya at the October 12 presidential election.

The rally was spearheaded by Hon Ngala Gerard and Fon Ju Wilson, two prominent North West elite resident in Douala.

The rally brought together indigenes of the North West and South West Regions resident in the economic capital.

The Mayor of Douala IV, Dr Hervé Moby Mpah, who spoke at the ceremony, emphasised the importance of solidarity and unity in ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral process.

Mayor Mpah appealed to the Anglophone community in Douala to unite to ensure President Paul Biya gets a 100% victory.

Hon Ngala Gerard raised concerns within the Anglophone population, stressing the need to avoid confusion and fake promises that have historically affected the peace and tranquility of the North West and South West Regions.

He recalled that in 2016, many were misled by false pledges from separatist propagandists, resulting in instability and mass exodus to other Regions, amongst which Douala is topping the list.

Hon Ngala urged the people of the North West and South West Regions resident in Douala to make a “wise choice” by voting for President Biya, come October 12.

The lawmaker described President Biya as the “architect of peace and national integration,” emphasising the benefits of peace for businesses, education, and community life in Douala.

“The population here, most of whom are from Regions affected by the crisis, should not fall victim to false promises again,” Ngala Gerard said, noting that: “We must remain united and vote for the candidate who ensures peace and development for Cameroon”.

The MP said it is important for the people to be educated on the need to stay peaceful and maintain the only person in power who can ensure a smooth peaceful transition for Cameroon.

For his part, Dr Roger Mbassa Ndine, City Mayor of Douala, reinforced the call with a focus on peace and development. Douala city chief executive urged the Anglophone community to view Douala as their second home and to actively contribute to its development while maintaining harmony.

The City Mayor stressed that President Paul Biya’s leadership over the past 40 years has been instrumental in preserving national peace. He argued that peace is essential for the continued growth of Douala as a commercial and educational hub.

On his part, Fon Ju Wilson of Koshin Village Menchum Division of the North West region told the population that peace is a prerequisite for development. The respected traditional ruler was categorical that President Paul Biya is uniquely positioned to deliver.
