October 12 election: Kamto urges opposition candidates to unite to achieve change.

Prof Maurice Kamto dreaming of opposition alliance

Prof Maurice Kamto who was barred from running for the October 12 presidential election has urged all opposition candidates in the race to unite to be able to achieve change in leadership.

Kamto made the call in a statement released Wednesday, September 17.

He emphasized the importance of collective action from the opposition candidates to end the CPDM’s long stay at the helm of the country.

Referring to his elimination from the race as "political and legal barbarism”, Kamto said if those seeking to end Biya’s rule form an alliance, they will open an historic chance for change.

He argued that a united front either through a consensus candidate or creating a strong alliance will mobilise Cameroonians to massively vote to change the country’s leadership.

"If the 10 opposition candidates come together behind one candidate, preferably the most experienced in politics and governance, they could ignite an unstoppable wave of public support that would make victory inevitable," Kamto stated.

The initiative, he said, must come from the candidates themselves, Kamto warned against reliance on external "kingmakers".

He urged the candidates to take proactive steps to simplify the electoral choice for voters eager for change.

Citing Bello Bouba Maigari and Issa Tchiroma Bakary who he said are "two valiant and worthy sons of Cameroon from the Northern region", Kamto said they must go beyond personal ambition and prioritise national interest.

With limited time remaining before voting day, Kamto called on the candidates to work tirelessly to form an alliance. He framed the moment as a rare opportunity for opposition leaders to demonstrate their interest in nation building.

Making analogy to a football match, he asked the candidates to select a penalty kicker who will score the winning goal to liberate Cameroon from the grip of the Biya regime.
