The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, NCPBM, has prioritized assessing the use of the country’s official languages prosecutors’ offices and security services in its action plan for 2025.

The President of the NCPDM, Peter Mafany Musonge, made the announcement in Yaounde, Friday January 31.

This was during a ceremony for members and staff of the Commission to present New Year wishes to the former Prime Minister.

In furtherance of its crusade to strengthen the country’s bilingualism experience, Musonge said a survey on the use of French and English in prosecutors’ offices, police stations and gendarmerie brigades remains a priority.

Added to this, Musonge disclosed that the Commission will finalise a draft preliminary instrument on incentives for the practice of bilingualism.

He said the action plan also includes promotion and implementation of official languages in devolved services and awareness on disseminating documents in decentralised services in regions.

To enhance the national policy on the promotion of official languages, Musonge said the NCPBM will monitor and evaluate the situation in some secondary and primary schools in Yaounde, Douala and Buea.

Within the diplomatic representations of Cameroon, he disclosed that this year, teams will be sent to Spain, Turkiye, Japan and Vatican, to evaluate the use of the country’s official languages. He also talked of plans to set up a mechanism to monitor and detect hate speech in mainstream and social media in the country.

Still within its 2025 action plan, Musonge said there will be a capacity-building workshop for promoters of Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, on hate speech and xenophobia.

This, he specified, will be within a collaborative platform that the NCPBM has with some CSOs. The Commission, stated has, also programmed organising an open day.

Don’t only preach but practice living together

Musonge charged members and staff of the Commission to not only preach living together but promote it in their interactions.

“I urge you to promote within the institution and in your interactions the living together that we must not only preach but more importantly practice on a daily basis,” Musonge remarked.

He saluted the staff and the Commission’s Secretary General, Dr Chi Asafor Cornelius, for 2024 achievements. Musonge, however, urged them to do more in 2025.

Corroborating Musonge, Dr Chi Asafor said NCPBM staff must “behave like members of the same family and show the outside world that the NCPBM can practice internally what it preaches externally; harmonious living together”.

Dr Chi Asafor urged staff to maintain discipline, team work and respect hierarchy to make 2025 a more fruitful year for the Commission.
