Close to 200 lawyers and advocates-in-training have been empowered on ways of drafting and implementing insurance contracts.

This was during a one-day seminar organised in Yaounde by Douala-based law firm, SCP Ngoulla Fotso & Associates.

This was in prelude to the elective general assembly Cameroon Association which begun July14, 2025.

It was placed under the theme: “The intervention of the lawyer in the implementation of damage insurance contracts”.

The workshop which had as main speaker former insurance executive and magistrate, Dr Ngoko Timo Raoul. It saw the participants being schooled on the economical settings of the insurance contract, parties’ obligations in the insurance contract, constitution of the file for payment of the compensation, and incidents arising from the implementation of the insurance contract.

The lessons were dished out alongside practical cases to ease the comprehension of especially for pupil lawyers.

Speaking during the event, Barrister Ngoulla Fotso Arlette of the Ngoulla Fotso and Associate Law Firm, said the seminar is a realisation of her drives to see that her colleagues and the younger generation of lawyers are better equipped with proven skills for the different issues related to the practice of the profession.

“So, after 42 years of professional practice, I realised that the training in Cameroon is not quite that great and some of us had the opportunity to be trained abroad. But the economic situation in Cameroon does not allow young lawyers and those who come after me to leave for all the seminars and training abroad. So, I undertook to train lawyers at the Cameroon Bar because I want to train them to acquire proven skills,” she explained.

The training in Yaounde comes after other capacity building workshops for lawyers organised in towns like Douala, Buea, Kumba, Bafoussam, Garoua, Bertoua, and Kribi.

Barrister Ngoulla who celebrated her fortieth anniversary at the Cameroon Bar two years ago, also used the event to reiterate her intension to run for post of Cameroon Bar president.

She said her intension is to reinvent the Bar with a slogan, “the strength of will, the courage to act”. She also outlined her plans to improving the health and wellbeing of lawyers.

Barrister Dr Morfaw Evaristus, Emeritus President of the Bar General Assembly, saluted the initiatives of Barrister Ngoulla Fotso to equip and empower lawyers.

“My appraisal can only be very positive because at every one moment, education is very important and given that the world is changing with artificial intelligence, education at the Bar should be regular,” Barrister Morfaw said.

“…many are those who don't master the procedure of insurance, and they complain every day that the insurance companies don't even pay. But from today, and the courses that we have gotten here, we hear that most often those files are not even regular,” he added.

According to Barrister Morfaw, the none payment of insurance cannot be blamed solely on insurance company as the insurers must make sure they pay the premiums in time.

Commenting on his colleague’s ambition to be plebiscited as new Batonnier, Barrister Morfaw described her is a square peg in a square hole. He has urged his colleagues to vote the right choice.

“I think she is apt with a lot of experience, expertise, and her selflessness. She has shown her leadership qualities and her candidature is welcome,” the Barrister Morfaw assured.

He added: “The Bar needs people who are like her. She has a lot of qualities to be the President of the Bar Council”.
