Mbengwi: Barrister Ndangoh-sponsored Meta Unity Sports Tournament gets underway.

The second edition of the Meta Unity Sports Tournament is underway in Mbengwi, Momo Division of the North West region. 

The competition, sponsored by legal mind and politician, Ntumfon Barrister Ndangoh Tah Calvin, through his foundation, was launched on Saturday July 5, 2025.



Accompanying the Cup donor during the launch of the competition, were traditional rulers, some elite and a cross section of the Mbengwi population.

This year’s edition of the Meta Unity Sports Tournament is featuring football boys and girls, handball boys and girls as well as a cross-country race.

The first matches played at Government Bilingual High School, Mbengwi playground, produced exciting spectacle. 

In the opening men’s football encounter, defending champions, Njembeng FC, trashed newcomers, Abi Fall boys by seven goals to one. 

There were two matches in female football, producing many goals. In a 20-goal thriller, Tondig Cirls defeated Mile 18 Girls by 14 goals against six, while Babeng Girls were 6-1 winners over Star Girls of Mbengwi.

In total, 30 goals were scored on day one of the Meta Unity Sports Tournament. The next round of matches has been scheduled for tomorrow July 8.

 

Sports for peace, dev’t 

Speaking after the kickoff, Barrister Ndangoh Tah said the purpose of organising the tournament was to contribute to bringing back peace in Mbengwi and Momo Division in general. 

He noted that for development to effectively take place in the entire Meta Clan, peace must be restored. 

“I see sports as something that can bring peace, and a platform for me to talk to the people of Mata. I started the first edition when everyone was afraid to do it. After last year’s edition, other competitions are now coming in,” the Cup donor said.

The founder of Ndangoh Tah Calvin Foundation also said before launching the first edition in 2024, he observed that the youth and the population of Momo Division did not have any sporting competition to keep them busy during holidays. 

He added that the Ndangoh Tah Calvin Foundation came in to fill the gap. “I identified that there was a gap [people were running away from Mbengwi because there was no peace] and I decided to fill it,” he said.

After successfully organising the first edition, the Foundation decided to continue with the initiative. 

Barrister Ndangoh said he is happy that he paved the way for such competitions in the Division, pointing out that such competitions are now being organised by other elite.

“I am thanking God for this year’s edition. We have had a lot of challenges and blockages. But we’re here to celebrate peace, and love. We don’t want to use sports to divide our people. We want to use sports to bring our people together,” Barrister Ndangoh added.

He urged all the participating teams to be peaceful, and play in a fairly as brothers and sisters. 

After officiating the kickoff, he told them that the purpose of the competition is to unite the youth and not to divide.

Message to Meta Clan

On the occasion of the launch of the holiday tournament, Barrister Ndangoh sent a strong message to those who are struggling create division among the people of Momo. He said sports is a unifying factor which is not supposed to be mixed with politics.

“I am fighting for a united Cameroon. I am a federalist. We can only encourage the youth by bringing them together through sports. I encourage these teams to play other competitions. This is not time for politics, we just want to play football now. I am sending this strong message to those who are struggling to divide the people of Meta. We’re out for peace and love,” Barrister Ndangoh said.

The organiser also revealed that the prizes have been increased this year. 

Officially sponsored by the Ndangoh Tah Calvin’s Foundation, this second edition, which will run till August, is taking place under the theme “one Meta, one development”.
