Personality of The Week: Yvon Sana Bangui, BEAC Governor.

The financial systems of the world have in the last couple of years been in the eye of a storm, with unprecedented shifts in geopolitics that is shattering age-old systems, theories and predictions.

Nations, multinational, global institutions, and economic blocs have been left with revisiting protectionists templates to fine their place under the sun, in the face of contemporary complexities.

Across the African continent, the challenge has remained herculean. Given the sharp rise in awareness, the masses continue to weigh the political will of public office holders in powering growth, local transformation and boosting the muscle of countries to face off international pressure.

The guiding bolt here is hinged on regulation of especially money, which till date remains a major ingredient that sets boundaries within countries, a sub-region and deal with competition from other global currencies.

It is within this prism that many continue to equate monetary sovereignty to national sovereignty in keeping nations and common interest blocs resilient.

It is a topic that has remained current and engaging across the years. Within the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, CEMAC, the power of ensuring monetary sovereignty has long been vested on the Bank of Central African States, BEAC.

Yet, in recent years, member countries of CEMAC have faced several shocks with those relating to excessive capital flight and dwindling foreign exchange reserves pushed to the rock bottom of global trade.

The irony has remained largely that the countries are rich with natural resources enough, that if harnessed, can turn things around for CEMAC and its populace.

The Governor of the BEAC, Yvon Sana Bangui, used the third edition of Finance Week this week, to lecture stakeholders on the potential time bomb stirring the six countries of the sub-region, if exchange regulation and local transformation of resources are not toughened and made efficient to retain capital.

Sana Bangui’s masterclass lecture on the dynamics of exchange regulation and the need for all to work to reverse the trend has been met with global acclaim.

Among those who have saluted his outing and lecture are Africans and other Pan-Africanist from across the globe.
