Yaounde: Political parties, CSOs present online portal for views on electoral code revision.

Political leaders at the press conference

A group of political parties and Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, meeting under the aegis of the Platform of Political Parties and Civil Society Committed To The Participatory and Consensual Reform of the Electoral System, have unveiled a web portal with the aim to exchange views with Cameroonians regarding the reform of the electoral code.

The web portal, www.revicode.cm, was presented during a recent press briefing in Yaounde.

Several political parties took part in the event including the Cameroon Democratic Union, CDU; the Cameroonian Party for National Reconciliation, PCRN; and the Progressive Movement, PM, among others.

Speaking at the conference, the National President of the CDU party, Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya, revealed that the web portal will enable the platform to better communicate with Cameroonians about the progress of the electoral process.

She added they are currently having exchanges with the body in charge of organising elections in Cameroon, ELECAM.

On his part, the interim President of the PM party, Hilaire Zipang, reiterated that there is a question of amending the electoral code following a consensual approach.

“ELECAM has published the provisional electoral lists. This has not been done since 2012. This is a major step forward. It is from this stage that we will know whether the current process will be fully reliable so that, together, we can approach 2025 under new auspices,” Zipang stated.

He added that: “We certainly do not agree with this code. We want it to be strictly applied so that it can be improved, because it is part of the legislative framework and will therefore go through the National Assembly”.

According to the platform of political parties and civil society, the web portal has a good user interface and varied content. In addition to information on the various parties that are members of the platform, there are forums for discussion.

The web portal, they say, will also facilitate the work of members, given the difficulties they sometimes face during physical meetings. The web portal will be officially launched on October 30.
