Suspected Amba fighters kill three police officers in Buea.

Gunmen, believed to be separatist fighters, have ambushed and killed three police officers in the village of Bwitingi, in Buea Subdivision, Fako Division of the South West Region.

The gunmen are reported to have ambushed the police officers on duty around 10:30 p.m. Saturday August 25.

The uniformed officers were said to be on duty on the road linking Muea to the Buea Central Market.

It is reported that the makeshift police post, located close to the Bwitingi Market, was instituted within the context of the armed conflict in the North West and South West Regions, to step the protection of people and property.

Reports hold that there were five officers on duty at the checkpoint. Of the two who survived, one had reportedly gone to buy food while the other was inside a makeshift office when the attackers stormed the area.

Some locals said the gunmen staged the attack rapidly before escaping into the unknown, reason the officer who was in the container came out unhurt.

The deceased police officers are said to comprise officers from three of the four police stations across Buea viz; Central Police Station, Molyko Police Station and the Muea Police Station.

The Guardian Post got the identities of those killed in the attack as; Second Grade Police Constable Laoumanga, who was serving at the Muea Police Station, Constable Tabe of the Muea Police Station and First Grade Police Constable, Beng of the Buea Central Police Station.

The corpses were ferried to the morgue of the Buea Regional Hospital Annex. This is said to be pending investigations into the attack and funeral arrangements.

The killing of the police officers comes less than two weeks to the start of the 2024/2025 academic year.

Back-to-school has since 2017 been a period of heightened insecurity in the restive North West and South West Regions.

This has largely been due to threats from separatist fighters to enforce their school boycott agenda.
