Douala General Hospital: Minister lays foundation stone for Oncology Centre.

The Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie, has laid the foundation stone for the construction of a centre for the diagnosis, treatment and work for the prevention of blood diseases.

The foundation stone for the Oncohaematology Centre was laid Thursday August 8 at the Douala General Hospital.



This was on sideline with a visit to the Douala General Hospital. He used the visit to tour the hemodialysis department, the new building of the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the Pharmacy Department and the Radiotherapy Department. 

For over four hours, the minister and his entourage had the opportunity to visit the different departments of the hospital as well as exchange with nurses, doctors and patients present.

The member of government was accompanied by the Governor of the Littoral, Region Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, and the Resident Representative of the World Health Organisation, WHO-Cameroon, Dr Phanuel Habimana.

The staff representative during the visit outlined a number of grievances, while calling of the minister to improve on the working condition of personnel of the hospital.

According to the minister, the new centre under construction is a major step forward for the national technical platform as a result of the number of treatments it is going to be offering.

The new centre, the member of government said, will significantly improve healthcare for patients suffering from pathologies that has to do with Oncohaematology.

According to Dr Manaouda, Oncohaematology is concerned with different types of blood cancer, such as leukaemia and lymphoma, which have a devastating impact on our society and a centre like that in Douala is very welcomed.

After listening keenly to the staff, Minister Manaouda noted that improving their working conditions remains a priority. He hailed the personnel for always being at the fore to assist patients and families that come knocking every day.

The Douala General Hospital, it should be said, handles over 100,000 specialist consultations, 5,500 emergency consultations and an impressive overall death rate of less than 5%.
