The traditional ruler of Oku, a Fondom in the Bui Division, North West Region, His Royal Majesty Fon Ngum IV, has been awarded a Certificate of Leadership in Public Management by the United States Government.

Fon Ngum IV made the revelation in a recent post on his official social media accounts.

In addition to the certificate, he also received signed letters of congratulations from U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris, and a commendatory letter from former President Barack Obama.

The award and recognition came after Fon Ngum IV completed a six-week course on Public Management at the Syracuse University in New York, USA.

This was after Fon Ngum IV was selected to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship, MWF, a prestigious programme for Young African Leaders, sponsored by the US Department of State.

Calling it a momentous achievement, the traditional ruler expressed gratitude to the US Government, for the programme and everyone else who supported him on his journey.

“This summer, I had the honour of joining top future African leaders in the United States for an intensive executive-style programme aimed at building skills and empowering us to lead in our respective sectors and communities,” Fon Ngum IV stated.

He noted that the commendations he received from leaders like Barack Obama and Kamala Harris have reinforced his commitment to merging cultural heritage with modern public management principles.

Having been a traditional ruler for three years and counting, he said the certificate will bolster his leadership endeavour.

“My core interest in this programme has been to blend traditional administration with democratic governance and public diplomacy. The training I received has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to effectively integrate these approaches, fostering a governance model that respects our traditions while embracing modern democratic principles,” Fon Ngum IV revealed.

Describing the fellowship as intellectually enriching, the Fon stressed on the importance of traditional authorities in bridging historical values with contemporary governance to create sustainable community solutions.

“This experience has been transformative, and I am eager to bring back the invaluable knowledge and skills to Oku. I am confident that what I have learned will greatly benefit our community and enhance our efforts in public management,” the Fon said.

Future prospects

Upon returning to Cameroon, Fon Ngum IV plans to establish the Coalition of Young Traditional Authorities in Cameroon.

It is an initiative that aims to leverage local traditional knowledge and practices to foster peace and development in communities, addressing the challenges of modern administration.

“This programme has reinforced my leadership skills and is a powerful reminder that our customs and traditions hold the keys to addressing many contemporary challenges,” he underscored.

Oku Fondom spotlighted

Fon Ngum IV dedicated his award to the people of Oku, where he has been King since December 2021.

“This significant personal achievement is dedicated to the resilient people of Oku, whose strength and support inspire my leadership. This recognition belongs to all of us, as our collective efforts and rich traditions have guided my journey,” the Fon said.

He added that it highlights the importance of their communal efforts and commitment to advancing their community through education, innovation, and cooperation.

“This recognition shines an international spotlight on Oku, encouraging us all to continue working towards our collective progress. Together, we thrive and continue to build a stronger and more vibrant Oku,” Fon Ngum stated.

Born on January 8, 1997, Fon Ngum IV is one of the youngest traditional rulers in the North West Region. He is the 16th Paramount Fon of Oku.
