CRTV’s Rene Katche wins Best Radio Sports Journalist prize.

Ace Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV, journalist, Rene Katche Echu, has scooped yet another award for his rare mastery of radio sports reporting.

The Douala-based multi-talented broadcast journalist, was July 25, crowned the country’s Best Radio Sports Journalist for the year 2023.



Katche, who has a knack for radio sports reporting, bagged the coveted prize at an award ceremony organised by members of the Cameroon English Language Newspaper Publishers Association, CENPA.

In presenting the award during the gathering, CENPA award jury, headed by international human rights lawyer, Barrister Akere Muna, said, Rene Katche was singled out “for his unchallenged mastery of sports and reporting same on radio”.

Meanwhile, reacting to the feat via a post on his verified Facebook Page, Katche said he was overwhelmed by the recognition, noting that it would spur him to redouble his efforts to serve the society better.

The happy recipient announced to his followers that: “We did it again! I’m thrilled and deeply humbled to have received Cameroon’s “Best Radio Sports Journalist Award for 2023”.

 

Katche, who has travelled widely across Africa, covering sports events, continued that: “My passion for radio and sports reporting has always driven me. I'm grateful to this respected association and its award committee, headed by the esteemed Barrister Akere Muna, for acknowledging my dedication”. 

“A heartfelt thank you goes to my family for the unwavering spiritual and moral support to my employer, CRTV, for providing the platform, and to all my followers for their encouragement and support. Above all, I thank God Almighty for good health, grace, and inspiration,” he added.

“This award fuels my drive to continue delivering quality sports journalism,” he also said.

The native of Menchum Division, in the North West Region, holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Buea.

With over 15 years of experience, Rene Katche specialises in sports journalism and has received numerous awards for his outstanding contributions. 

Katche is skilled in both print and broadcast communication, as well as public relations and advertising. Rene Katche began his modest journalism career with CBS Radio Buea.

He also had stints with Radio Sports Info Douala, Mount Cameroon FM Buea, Mediafrique FM Buea and CRTV FM 94 Yaounde. He has been a sports reporter with CRTV since 2016.

 

 

Successful career, achievements

In his over 15 years career as a journalist, Rene Katche has won several awards and distinctions for his savvy and professionalism. 

In 2023, Katche bagged the Best Radio Journalist from The Public Vision Awards. 

In 2020, he was named Best Broadcast Journalist in Cameroon by The Guardian Post. 

Meanwhile, earlier in 2017, he bagged the Best Sports Caster by The Scoop Newspaper. 

Amongst major national and international events he participated in, Katche has covered 14 editions of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, seven editions of the Cameroon All University Games, African Women's Cup of Nations 2016 (Main Commentator), COSAFA Women's Nations Cup 2018 (Senior Women's National Team Coverage).

He has also covered the African Nations Championship 2021 (Main Radio Commentator), FIFA World Cup Qualifiers 2021 (Main Radio Commentator), Africa Cup of Nations 2021 (Main Radio Commentator) and FIFA World Cup 2022 (Radio Commentator and TV Coverage). 

He also covered the Douala International Marathon 2022 (TV Commentator).

Besides being a sports journalist, Katche is also Public Relations Officer, PRO for Indomitable Lions striker, Clinton Njie, and the Clinton Njie Care Foundation.
