Non-governmental organisation, Good Citizenship Saves Lives, known by its French acronym CISAL, specialised in educating and sensitising the public on best practices on the highway, in order to curb road accidents, recently took its campaign to Bafoussam in the West Region.

This was during the 17th edition of the National FENASSCO League B Games reserved for primary school pupils from across Cameroon.

The National Coordinator of CISAL, Cathy Belan Massongo, accompanied by some volunteers of the organisation were on the field from June 9 to 14, the period during which the games were organised.

They took out time to meet and exchange with the young athletes, officials coordinating the games as well as members of the public.

Speaking to The Guardian Post about the activity, the National Coordinator of CISAL, said: “We were in Bafoussam for the entire period of the Games. We were at the stand of the Ministry of Basic Education, given that they are one of our partners. Our activities consisted simply of sensitising the population and children in particular on good citizenship practices”.

Cathy Massongo went on to add that: “We are insisting particularly on safety measures on the highway during this period of holidays. You know that in June each year which is the start of the summer holidays, the Ministry of Transport organises a campaign dubbed ‘Holidays without Accidents’. The campaign is already effective and since we work in partnership with the Transport ministry, we are using the opportunity to pass out messages on road safety”.

According to the CISAL official, they shared with the children some of the best practices to be adopted while on the highway so that they don’t run the risk of being involved in accidents.

“So, we talked to them on how to behave on the road and also shared with them flyers from the Ministry of Transport. The children were excited to listen to our messages and also receive the flyers and other gadgets,” she stated.

Besides the sensitisation, the volunteers of the organisation were also involved in clean-up exercises at various sites at the FENASSCO Games village.

“By his act, we wanted to also tell the public the importance of littering the environment with garbage and making it unhealthy,” she added.

The activities of CISAL at the FENASSCO Games village in Bafoussam attracted the attention of not only athletes and officials but also members of the public who came out to live the moment of the competition.

The Secretary of State to the Minister of Basic Education, Dr Asheri Kilo who made a stop at the stand where CISAL was lodged, congratulated the team for the work they are doing to curb accidents on highways in the country.

About CISAL

The organisation which specialises in the education and sensitisation of the population on best practices to curb road accidents has been existing for the last five years.

It was founded by Danault Mbounga, a native of Bafang in Upper Nkam Division of the West Region resident in France. Mbounga said came up with the initiative, years after he had an accident which almost caused his life.

CISAL has been educating and sensitising Cameroonians to respect the Highway Code, to be civic, respect traffic lights, say no to overload, respect speed limits and also have the necessary documents, including visit technique and insurance.

The organisation has been working in collaboration with the Ministries of Transport, Basic Education, Youth Affairs and Civic Education as well as the Roger Milla Foundation.
