Cameroon’s High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, has showcased the cultural heritage, diversity and beauty of the country known as Africa in miniature.

This was during a cultural day event in Canada dubbed Celebration of Cultures, which took place at the Algonquin College in Ottawa recently.

The event brought together more than 15 Embassies, High Commissions and organisations, with the aim to spotlight different cultures and traditions from various countries around the world.

Cameroon's High Commission was represented at the event by the Cultural Counsellor, Prof Athanasius Ayuk, and the Cultural Attaché, Lydie Bokally.

The High Commission, according to reports, used the opportunity to present to the thousands of visitors some of the country's major customs and traditions.

On display were handicrafts from different regions of Cameroon, different cultural fabrics, and various dishes, among others, coming from the four cultural zones of the country, notably the Grassfields, the Fang Beti, the Sawa and the Sudano Sahelian.

There was also a virtual presentation of various touris sites in Cameroon such as the Limbe and Kribi beaches, Waza Park, Dja and Korup reserves, Lobe, Ekom and Menchum waterfalls, Mvog Betsi zoo, Limbe botanical garden, and the various plants and animals therein.

Visitors to Cameroon’s stand are said to have enjoyed a plethora of local dishes including Jollof rice, puff-puff and beans, Kati Kati, Eru, Ndole, Okok, among others.

Cameroon’s High Commission printed out flyers with information on Cameroon, which were distributed to the numerous guests who visited the stand.

Cameroonian students in Canada took part in the event, and happily united with the High Commission team to speak proudly of their country and what it has to offer.

Prof Athanasius Ayuk is quoted as having said Algonquin College has a total of 35 Cameroonian students, studying in different fields including Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Sciences, Hotel Management and Culinary Sciences.

The Cultural Counsellor and Attaché equally used the event as an opportunity to meet and talk with the students and encourage them to continue to be good ambassadors of the country at all times, as students and after graduation.

Algonquin College is said to be one of the best private institutions in Ottawa and the Province of Ontario in Canada.

It is host to numerous international students and Faculties, the reason it was chosen for the event. Also present at the event were diplomatic missions from Ghana, Zambia, Morocco, Peru, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Thailand, among others. The next edition of Celebration of Cultures is scheduled for April 2025.
