The Interim Minister of Mines, Industries and Technological Development, Prof Fuh Calistus Gentry, has expressed satisfaction with progress made on multi-billion FCFA mining projects in the South Region of the country.

Professor Fuh Calistus Gentry visited the project sites Wednesday at the start of a two-day working visit to the Region.

The Minister began the visit in the city of Kribi, Ocean Division of the South Region.

When Minister Fuh Calistus arrived the South Region Wednesday November 15, he first visited the two Grand Zambi iron ore mining sites. The project is operated by Cameroonian company, G-Stones Resources. The Minister had also inspected work at the Kribi-Lolabé iron ore mining site.

The progress of work, it was disclosed, signals the effective start of the mining exercise. It was gathered that the assembly of the multi-functional crusher, road construction and the installation of a 25-megawatt power plant are underway.

The Cameroonian operator has announced that the first exports of iron concentrate will take place in December 2024.

During the visit to the Lolabé iron ore mining site, it emerged that work on the 20-kilometre mining road is well advanced, with 16 kilometres already laid out from the company's site to the port of Kribi.

It also emerged that part of the mining company's site encroaches on the port of Kribi, causing misunderstandings on the ground.

On Thursday November 16, Minister Fuh Calistus held two strategic meetings with officials from the Port of Kribi and another with the traditional authorities of Campo.

Before embarking on the high-level visit to the South Region Wednesday, Minister Fuh Calistus Gentry, it should be recalled, had Monday defended a new bill to revise the mining code.

The bill establishing the general legal framework and fundamental guidelines regarding the mining sector in Cameroon was tabled by government for scrutiny. The 200 articles contained in the draft piece of legislation were presented and defended by Minister Fuh Calistus Gentry.

It should be mentioned that the innovations in the new draft law concerns the integration of SONAMINES which was not taken into account in the Mining Code of 2016.
