U20 World Athletics Championships: Simone Bessong to represent Cameroon in US.

It will bring together 1,800 young athletes from some 147 countries. It will end on Sunday August 9.

The Cameroon Athletics Federation, FECATHLETICS, announced Bessong’s selection for the championship on Monday.

The federation said the youngster will compete in the women’s 100m and 200m categories of the global showpiece which is organized by the planetary governing body of athletics, World Athletics.

FECATHLETICS described the competition as platform that will provide the Cameroonian with an opportunity to test herself against the world’s best elite athletes in her category.

“Big congratulations to her for this selection which rewards her work and talent. The whole nation is behind her,” the national governing body of athletics in Cameroon said in a post on its official Facebook page.

Demanding assignment

Bessong’s primary challenge in Eugene will be to win Cameroon’s first ever medal since the Under20 World Athletics Championships was launched in 1986 as the World Junior Championships.

The 19-year-old heads to the Eugene championships with a personal and season-best of 11.73 seconds and 23.96 seconds in the women’s 100m and 200m respectively.

She is expected to successfully challenge favorites like Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas in her quest for medals in the competition. 

Shanoya won a bronze medal in the women’s 200m category in the last edition of the competition in Peru in 2024 in 23.10 seconds. 

She enters the 2026 showpiece as the fastest in the category with a season and personal best time of 22.11 seconds. 

The 19-year-old Jamaican is also the favorite in the women’s 100m series as she enters the competition as the fastest in the category with a season and personal best time of 10.98 seconds. 

Global sprinting great in the making 

Bessong first came to the limelight in Cameroon last month after shining at the 2026 edition of the Cup of Cameroon in athletics.

The 19-year-old won a gold medal in the women’s 100m category of the national challenge cup competition where she participated as an invited athlete. 

She secured the distinction after she won her race in the final of the 100m category in 11.85 seconds.

The runner defeated Tedege Andjong of Cameroonian athletics club, Athletics in Action and Stephanie Njuh of the athletics team of the army and police forces of Cameroon FAP. The two completed the race in 11.87 seconds and 12.00 seconds respectively.

In the United States where young Bessong is based, the sprinter is respected as one of the finest athletes especially within the collegiate sports circle. 

She has won multiple awards in athletics in the past few months especially in the colors of the University of Dayton in Ohio.

As a freshman, the youthful sprinting sensation whose father, David Bessong played professional football in Cameroon, was notably distinguished as the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer recently.

She received the award after winning seven conference championship medals and leading the University of Dayton to its first-ever Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship crown in May this year. 

The Cameroonian also bagged the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team award for both the indoor and outdoor seasons of the competition.

The Atlantic 10 Conference is a collegiate track and field competition which brings together athletes to compete across multiple categories.
