To boost private sector cooperation: US-Cameroon strategic economic dialogue set for August 27.

The Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Masséna Ngallé Bibéhé, made the announcement recently after talks with the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the United States Embassy in Cameroon, John G. Robinson.

The ministry said the strategic dialogue will focus on improving the business environment between Cameroon and the United States, identifying trade and investment opportunities, and strengthening economic engagement between public and private sector actors. 

The meeting, the ministry said, forms part of Robinson’s official visit following his appointment as interim head of mission in January 2026. 

Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the transport sector and reviewing several issues of mutual interest. 

Among them were concerns over vessels fraudulently operating under the Cameroonian flag, reforms to the regulatory framework governing ship registration and management, disease surveillance at entry points and preparations for the upcoming economic dialogue.

According to information released by the Ministry of Transport, Cameroon has suspended new ship registrations since February 2026 and is working with partners, including the United States and the European Union, to identify and remove vessels illegally using the country's flag while violating international maritime regulations. 

The ministry also indicated that reforms to the ship registration and management framework have been completed and are awaiting validation.

According to the ministry, both officials further reviewed health screening measures at airports and other points of entry. 

The ministry said normal screening operations continue at Yaounde-Nsimalen and Douala international airports through cooperation between health authorities and the civil aviation sector.

Growing economic relations

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Robinson said discussions focused on existing cooperation in transport and opportunities to deepen collaboration. 

He noted that both countries were working together on ship registry issues and disease prevention measures at airports and other entry points. 

The US diplomat said the forthcoming dialogue would create an opportunity to strengthen business-to-business engagement and expand economic cooperation.

According to Robinson, discussions had highlighted the need to build on existing partnerships and encourage greater private sector participation.

“We’re doing quite a bit of cooperation, particularly in ship registry. What we would like to see is ways that we can increase our private sector cooperation. That is one of the reasons the dialogue we will be holding with Cameroon at the end of August will be an opportunity to explore what some of those engagements can be,” Robinson said.

The planned dialogue comes as the United States increases efforts to expand commercial engagement with Cameroon through investment, financing and business partnerships. 

At PROMOTE 2026 in Yaounde, Robinson said Washington was prioritising trade, investment and technology transfer as part of a broader strategy to support sustainable economic growth and stronger private sector partnerships across Africa.
