National Assembly Speaker receives royal congratulations from Bamoun Sultan.

Rt Hon Theodore Datouo in talks with His Majesty Mouhammad-Nabil Mforifoum Mbombo Njoya

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon Theodore Datouo, has received a courtesy visit from the Sultan of the Bamouns, His Majesty Mouhammad-Nabil Mforifoum Mbombo Njoya.

The monarch led a delegation from Noun Division to personally congratulate the House Speaker who doubles as an elite of the West Region on election to the top legislative body.

The Sultan was accompanied by members of the Bamoun community and senior personalities, including Yap Abdou, First Notable of the Bamoun Royal Palace and President of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court.

The delegation travelled to meet the Speaker after earlier scheduling constraints had prevented an exchange between the two leaders.

According to the delegation, the visit was organised to convey the Sultan’s congratulations and reaffirm the support of the Bamoun community and traditional chieftaincies for the Speaker.

During discussions, the delegation also commended the Head of State’s endorsement of Datouo’s candidacy.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Yap Abdou said the visit reflected the importance attached by the Sultan to personally delivering his message of support.

“This was simply a courtesy visit. After the election of the President of the National Assembly, the Sultan of the Bamouns sent a delegation under my leadership to convey congratulations and express the support of the Bamoun community. Once their schedules were harmonised, the Sultan travelled in person to offer his heartfelt congratulations because he considered it important not to wait for the Speaker to come to the West Region,” Yap Abdou said.

The First Notable added that the Sultan assured the Speaker of the backing of the Bamoun community and traditional rulers.

He also said the Speaker informed the delegation that he would continue to rely on traditional authorities in the implementation of parliamentary policies and in carrying out his responsibilities as an elected representative.

On his part, the House Speaker expressed gratitude for the visit and the confidence shown by the Sultan and his delegation.

He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the West Region while fulfilling his legislative and parliamentary duties.

As part of the ceremony, the Sultan presented Datouo with a wooden sculpture slate symbolising the rule of law and legislative authority.
