Ndu Mayor wins Cameroon's Best Mayor Award.

Official handing over award to Abdou Kanfon

El Hadj Abdou Kanfon Borno, the man who has since 2020 been rewriting the development trajectory of Ndu Council in Donga Mantung Division of the North West Region, is on the honour roll again. His latest distinction is that of Cameroon’s best mayor for the year 2025.

The recognition ties to several local development initiatives and other benchmarks in sustainable local development, wherein the Ndu Council, under Abdou Kanfon’s leadership has remained all-round best.

Credited with across-the-board development schemes that have overhauled the outlook of Ndu, a municipality which before his election in 2020, never dreamt of, Kanfon Borno is steadily becoming a rare example of what and how local development should be handled.

From the profession of basic social services such as water, roads and befitting structures for public services and education, Abdou Kanfon Borno, has stayed relevant and shining in service to the population.

Ndu, the abandoned town of yesterday, is today not just on the billboard of the best managed local councils but also boasts of one of the country’s most admired local development pathfinders in the person of Abdou Kanfon Borno.

With the many positives on ground in terms of development, respect for standards, promoting inclusivity and accountability to the local population, another season of celebration came again Saturday June 27, 2026, in Bafoussam, West Region.

The event was the award ceremony of The Vanguard Media Group, VAMEG.

On that occasion, Mayor Abdou Kanfon walked to the podium to receive the distinction of the 2025 Best Mayor in Cameroon.

While others say it as a surprise, the development bulwark may not have been surprised, especially given that in the last couple of years, he has beaten several municipalities and mayors in many competitions to bag home prizes.

During the event, he was praised for his new approach to local development that has defied all odds to bring development to the door steps of his people.

To situate the trajectory that has kept the Council on such a pedestal, the Ndu Council, days ago, released a detailed data of some of its recent achievements and plans for the future.

In 2025 alone, the Council held several records, among them; it was the winner of the Clean City Contest in the North West Region that year.

In that competition, it garnered 1063.50 points out of 1200.  The committee that oversaw the exercise pegged the Council first in terms of cleanliness at a percentage of 88.63%.

At the national level, the Ndu Council clinched the 7th position, going home with 40 million FCFA for other development projects.

It is an annual exercise, which the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development organises nationwide. The Abdou Kanfon-led Council won the My Name Challenge competition, which UNICEF and partners supported.

It helped the My Name Challenge, which helped many children to access birth certificates, which are vital civil status documents. Still in 2025, the Ndu Council was awarded the most inclusive council in Cameroon.

In his quest for peace to further enhance development, Abdou Kanfon organised a peace, justice and reconciliation gathering in the municipality in 2025.

During the gathering, various segments of the Ndu municipality came face-to-face and discussed issues affecting community bonding and unity.  Since that gathering, a steering Committee, which saw the light of day, has continued to work to promote peace and dialogue permanently across Ndu Subdivision.

In 2025, it came second in terms of the execution of Public Investment Projects at 100 % across the North West Region.

Community hygiene mantra

Abdou Kanfon, the mayor who has risked it all to stay in his municipality, amidst threats to his life, has worked out several local initiatives.

The population of Ndu municipality has become accustomed to regular weekly cleanup exercises, thanks to the serial development icon.

Ndu municipality today boasts of one of the best green spaces across the country.

Several projects, which he also pioneered to beautify Ndu, are also still alive five years on. He worked with the local population and put in place village neighbourhood committees, which continue to see into the cleanliness of the environment and ensure access to clean water.

Abdou Kanfon is severally cited for the Wowo and Ngulu water supply schemes.

Where everyone has a voice

The Ndu Council is today a community where inclusivity is not an afterthought. Before many councils and mayors started talking about inclusivity, Mayor Abdou Kanfon is the man who introduced it from day one.

In the municipality, there is no discrimination in employment, service and other aspects of social life.  Little wonder, it shined when the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF-backed My Name Challenge was carried out to ensure efficient birth registrations.

Infrastructure miracle

When it comes to infrastructure, Mayor Abdou Kanfon has achievement beyond measure. From rehabilitation to construction, bridges, roads, schools and a modern Council edifice continue to speak of his proximity leadership style.

Infrastructure: The lifeline of community development

Understanding that robust infrastructure is the backbone of economic and social vitality, Mayor Borno has spearheaded numerous projects, aimed at enhancing connectivity and service delivery.

Among them are works to upgrade the Ndu–Njiplvu–Mbipgo-Fuh link road. He has also improved roads across Ndu Town.

When it comes to school, his 2025 report card point to realisations such as; the construction of Government Nursery School, GNS, Mbiyeh and Government School, GS Mbadfung.

The same schools have also been supplied with benches. Several palaces have also been put up to standard across the Ndu municipality.

The Mayor is on record as having repeatedly told his people that ensuring access to basic social services is a mission that must be sustained to serve today and tomorrow’s generation.

Rebranding Ndu Council

The Ndu Council is more visible than before. Its image has been built to a new high with its functional website and presence on different social media handles that have eased access to information and kept the population more engaged.

The Ndu Community Radio has also become a key instrument of informing the population and mobilising them for local initiatives.

Sociocultural renaissance, transparency

Mayor Abdou Kanfon is not just winning for doing the right things, he is also respecting the laws in force and following procedures.

His leadership has overhauled the economic fabric of Ndu municipality, revived sociocultural activities and created an improved environment for small businesses to thrive.

He has established a participatory approach to development, with people at the centre. That has eroded mistrust and boosted the public trust in his management style.

Abdou Kanfon has made it a duty to always explain every development decision to the people. Little wonder, the council’s performance basket with the resilient communities project, PROLOG, is valued at 330 million FCFA.

Other roads earmarked

Going forward, Abdou Kanfon is said to have already carried feasibility studies on many projects for the future.

Among the roads are; the Mbajeng-Njimnkang, Ndu-Mbongong-Njipnjong, Ndu-Taku-Ntundip-Luh-Mboyah, Ndu-Wowo-Ntumbaw Road, Wowo-Sinna, Sop-Sinna, Ntumbaw-Ngarbuh and the Njipluh-Boyar.

The mayor’s plan, we are told, is to get the works done through the labour intensive approach, HIMO, to provide jobs for hundreds of youths and boost the economy of Ndu.
