At PROMOTE: Gov’t lauds strength of UK-Cameroon cooperation.

The Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Paul Tasong, made the positive remarks in Yaouunde Monday. 

He was during the symbolic opening of the UK Pavilion and Business Forum at the ongoing International Exhibition for Enterprises, SMEs and Partnership of Yaounde, PROMOTE. 

Minister Tasong used the event to state Cameroon enjoys exceptional cooperation with Great Britain and the entire member States of the Commonwealth, spanning the domains of sports, culture, economy and diplomacy.

He added that the volume of this decade of successful UK-Cameroon economic cooperation is even getting more intense over time.

Cooperation volume nearing 1,000 billion FCFA 

Further assessing the cooperation, the minister explained that the volume of the Cameroon-UK cooperation, in the coming months, will hit the 1,000 billion FCFA mark within a short period of time.

"This is sufficient to give you, in terms of quantity, where we are. If you look at the number of projects which are being financed by UK cooperation through its different arms, particularly the UK Export Finance Agency, which provides guarantees when we go out looking for funding from UK financial institutions, or looking for technical expertise from UK producers and exporters," Minister Tasong explained.

He also pointed that projects powered through UK cooperation have equally been in line with government's policy of import substitution. 

Tasong cited among other projects the Ebolowa-Akom II Road linking the South Regional capital city to the strategic Kribi Port and the irrigation project dubbed, Adamawa Project, which aims to develop a 15,000 hectares farmland for animal feeds. 

The Adamawa project, Tasong added, will ensure Cameroon becomes self-sufficient in meat products.

"This cooperation is also bringing on board the UK private sector, which comes with expertise on managing some of the challenges that we have in the country," Tasong added.

Enter UK High commissioner

According to the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, H.E Matt Woods, the UK Pavilion at PROMOTE is designed, not only as an exhibition space, but as a platform for deal-making, policy dialogue and strategic influence, bringing together key decision-makers and business leaders.

The UK Pavilion corporate partners exhibiting at PROMOTE include BUNS Construction LTD, UK Cameroon Chamber of Commerce, Beko Capital, Oriole Resources, ONA PAY, Verto FX, PROPAV Infrastructure, ICM Construction, Access Bank Cameroon, Dar Construction, AECO Limited, Biaka University Institute and Amadagana and Partners Law firm.

Moving from donor to investor cooperation

The UK High Commissioner also explained that the Great Britain vis-a-vis it's policy in Cameroon is moving from a donor to investor or from aid to trade cooperation. 

"So, what we are doing today and all through the week is celebrating all of the success that has come in partnership between British companies and Cameroonian companies, in partnership between British people and Cameroonian people, and in partnership between the British government and the Cameroonian government," the diplomat said.
