Some sisters and brothers of the deceased leader of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy, MANIDEM, have announced that they will boycott the politician’s funeral. Anicet Ekane is expected to be interred on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The boycott announcement is said to have been made public by one of the sisters of Ekane, Marianne Simone Ekane.

She is quoted as having declared that eight of them, comprising brothers and sisters of the politician, will not attend his burial.

Marianne is said to have indicated that they are not in agreement with one of the sons of the deceased, Muna Ekane.  She is also said to have accused Muna of betrayal in the organisation of the funeral.

Days before the boycott announcement, Marianne had surfaced in a video online, declaring that she had been receiving threats from unknown persons.

Marianne, in the video, promised to write a complaint against unknown persons at the judicial police in Douala.

Marianne, alongside her eight brothers and sisters, are said to be holding the same position as the widow of Ekane, Ekane Sogue Jeanne-Edwige and the last son of the deceased.

Those kicking against the funeral programmed this Saturday, including the MANIDEM party, are said to be claiming that the entire process has been confiscated.

The announced boycott is the latest of episodes that have been characterising the journey of Ekane to the world beyond. He died on December 1, 2025 in Yaounde. His widow and two sons from his first marriage are said to have gone to court over the organisation of the funeral.

In a ruling on that matter on Monday April 13, 2026, the Douala Court of First Instance handed the corpse to the two sons of the deceased MANIDEM leader.

The court then ruled that the sons of Ekane are those with sole right to organise his funeral, while the wife was removed from the arrangement. The situation went out of hand on March 23, 2026, leaving the warring party with seeking the intervention of the court.

Ekane’s three children viz; Mukate Sankara Ekane, Elombo Bomono Ekane and Dr Muna Ekane are said to be those who seized the court. They had first accused Ekane’s widow of confiscating their father’s corpse and organising his funeral without consulting other family members.

The court had beyond answering their prayer of taking over the arrangement, failed to set a date for the burial as they had also requested.

Among other points of disagreement, they first picked holes with the widow of their father, after the corpse was officially released to the family after investigations.

The three kids are said to have stated that, they got wink of the release of the corpse through the social media.

Meanwhile, in a statement on April 8, 2026, MANIDEM National Communication Secretary, Charles Ngah Nforgang, had indicated that since the corpse was handed to Ekane’s widow, funeral arrangements had suffered several disruptions.

Ngah had indicated that Ekane’s widow had programmed the funeral for April 23, 24 and 25, 202y.  Ekane died on December 1, 2025 at the age of 74.
