Camusat, MTN Cameroon inaugurate sustainable telecoms site in Japoma.

Bakoko Wouri Chief cuts inaugural ribbon as MTN, partners look on

Telecoms infrastructure giant, Camusat Group, has in partnership with MTN Cameroon, inaugurated a new-generation sustainable telecoms site in Japoma, Douala, Douala III Subdivision.

The new development aims at strengthening digital connectivity and promoting environmentally responsible infrastructure deployment in Cameroon.

The inauguration ceremony, which took place Wednesday April 29, brought together top executives of both companies, local authorities and community representatives.

Among personalities present were Richard Thomas, President and Chief Executive Officer of Camusat Group; Karim Chekroun, Managing Director of Camusat Cameroon; Wanda Matandela, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Cameroon; Ada Diouf, Executive Director of Camusat Africa and the traditional custodians of the Bakoko Wouri, led by their Chief, HRM Jamil Songwe.

The newly inaugurated telecoms site is powered through Camusat’s TWESCO model, an integrated infrastructure solution designed to combine financing, deployment and operations under a long-term sustainable framework.

Company officials said the initiative marks a major shift from conventional telecoms infrastructure rollout models toward a more resilient and environmentally conscious system capable of meeting growing connectivity demands across the country.

Speaking during the ceremony, Richard Thomas described the project as more than just the launch of a telecoms site.

“This inauguration is more than a site launch. It is the concrete illustration of a new infrastructure model,” Thomas stated.

“With TWESCO, we align investment, operational expertise and long-term performance to accelerate connectivity while delivering measurable environmental and social impact. We are proud to partner with MTN on this milestone project in Cameroon,” he added.

For his part, MTN Cameroon CEO, Wanda Matandela, underscored the importance of the partnership in expanding access to digital services across communities.

“The TWESCO model supports our ambition to connect more communities faster and in a more sustainable way, making digital access a powerful driver of inclusion and economic growth in Cameroon,” Matandela said.

He noted that the model aligns with MTN Cameroon’s vision of responsible digital development, while contributing to the reduction of the company’s environmental footprint.

The telecoms firms explained that the site is expected to improve network coverage and support rising mobile data demand, while ensuring energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions.

Speaking to reporters after the inauguration, Executive Director of Camusat Africa, Ada Diouf, highlighted the strategic importance of telecommunications in modern society, describing the sector as one of the most vital pillars of daily life.

“The telecoms sector has become a strategic sector. Today, everybody depends on connectivity for communication, emergencies, financial services and daily activities,” Diouf said.

She stressed that sustainable telecoms infrastructure requires not only investment from operators and infrastructure companies, but also the support and protection of local communities.

“A telecoms site that is vandalised is a site that no longer works and this affects an entire community. What we are trying to build is infrastructure that is resilient and available 24 hours a day,” she explained.

Ada Diouf further praised the collaboration between Camusat, MTN Cameroon and local communities, noting that the objective is to strengthen the digital ecosystem across the country.

“What we are building here is to strengthen the links within an ecosystem. What we do is for the community and the community will do it for us,” she said.

The Camusat Africa Executive Director disclosed that under the partnership framework, about 100 telecoms pylons have already been deployed in Cameroon, with additional projects underway in underserved areas.

“We will continue deployment in areas that need it most, because the objective is to ensure that a young person in Douala is as connected as another in Yaounde or any other part of Cameroon,” she added.

Officials of both companies reiterated their shared commitment to accelerating digital inclusion and promoting sustainable telecoms infrastructure development across Africa.

Camusat Group said the TWESCO model also supports its Environmental, Social and Governance, ESG, commitments through decarbonisation, energy efficiency and long-term infrastructure performance.

MTN Cameroon, a subsidiary of the MTN Group operating in 22 countries, has been providing electronic communication and mobile financial services in Cameroon since February 2000 and remains a leading player in the country’s telecommunications sector.
