Construction of Bamenda-Wum Road: Minister tells visiting Menchum delegation finalising process to award contract.

Minister Djoumessi & Menchum delegation

The Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Ngannou Djoumessi, has told a visiting delegation of elite of Menchum Division that plans are underway for the imminent award of the contract for the construction of the long-awaited 80km long Bamenda-Bafut-Wum stretch of road.

The minister gave the assurance Wednesday, April 22.

This was during an audience he granted a group of elite from Menchum Division.

The delegation was led by Honourable Richard Wallang Ebua, Member of Parliament for Menchum South Special Constituency. Other members included the Mayor of Wum, Dighambong Anthony, the Fon of Aghem, Bahmbi II and the Fon of Waindo, Noah Ndung.

The members of the delegation told the Minister they had come to express the people’s gratitude to the Head of State for the Bamenda–Bafut–Wum road construction project, an extension of the Ndu–Nkambe–Misaje section of the Ring Road.

During the meeting, the Minister of Public Works provided an update on the progress of the process, stating that authorisation had already been obtained from the public procurement authority for the pre-selection of companies that have both a local presence in the area and the necessary technical and financial capabilities.

The tender documents are currently being finalised and are expected to be submitted to the Special Procurement Commission in the coming days, the Minister said.

According to the agreed timetable, the documents are scheduled to be forwarded to the funding body, notably the African Development Bank, for a no-objection notice by the end of May 2026, with the aim of signing the contracts before the end of the year.

Minister receiving Menchum delegation

The developments were welcomed by the delegation from Menchum, which made no secret of its satisfaction.

Comprising elected representatives, notably the Member of Parliament for Menchum South and the Mayor of Wum, traditional authorities, including the Fon of Aghem, as well as women political leaders and young people, each member expressed their deep gratitude to the Head of State and the Government for the long-awaited project.

The speakers unanimously emphasised the importance of the infrastructure, which offers hope for opening up the area, reviving economic activity and improving living conditions for the local population.

During the discussions, some members of the delegation highlighted the mobility challenges faced by the local population for decades, citing precarious transport conditions and the many risks involved.

The announcement of the imminent construction of the said major road is thus seen as a decisive turning point for the Menchum division.

At the conclusion of the discussions, the Minister for Public Works reaffirmed his commitment to faithfully convey the messages of gratitude to the President of the Republic, whilst reassuring the local population that the process leading to the start of works would be pursued with due diligence.
