On working visit: Hon Datouo inspects Hôtel des Députés, hints on imminent modernisation.

Hon Datouo speaking to reporters at close of the visit

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon Theodore Datouo, has summarily announced the renovation and modernisation of the State-run Hôtel des Députés, which serves as accommodation for Members of Parliament, MPs.

The House speaker gave the hint while on a working visit to the facility on Sunday, March 29. Hon Datouo was accompanied during the visit by his close collaborators and colleagues MPs.

His delegation was journeyed through the hotel facility by its Manager, Hoche Mozogo. It was gathered that most segments of the hotel are currently begging for urgent renovation and upgrading.

Hon Datouo had during the guided tour, visited the lodging area, the restaurant section, gymnasium, the courtyard and other facilities.

Visibly touched by the disturbing state of the facility, Hon Datouo immediately hinted that the hotel may soon undergo renovation works with instructions of the Head of State, whom he said, remains particularly concerned about the welfare of lawmakers.

“We came here today to see how the place is and to appreciate what is happening here…prepare our evaluation,” Hon Datouo who recently replaced Hon Cavaye Yeguie, told a group of prying journalists who accompanied him during the visit.

The veteran politician explained to reporters that: “I should say this visit has permitted us to do an assessment of the state of this hotel. You know, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya had decided to ameliorate the working and living conditions of Members of Parliament. As for the working condition, he has already done something with the construction of Paul Biya Glass House”.

He continued that: “So, the second phase is to ameliorate the living conditions of the MPs through the hotel for the MPs. You see, an MP can’t leave his constituency in very good condition to come and pick up an illness at the hotel in Yaounde, it is not a good thing. Hotel Des Deputes has to regain its image. It has to be modernized and positioned to reflect image of our institution”.

Built more than 50 years ago, Hôtel des Députés remains one of Yaoundé's leading hotels. Located in the city centre, set back from noisy roads, in the heart of the administrative district and on the banks of the Yaounde municipal lake, the hotel features a bar-restaurant, a panoramic terrace, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a nightclub and a conference room for business and corporate events.

The fully-equipped rooms are comfortable and spacious, in line with international standards.
