Bamenda: Tournament to preach peace, unity in Nkvurah quarter ends in style.

The Quarter Head, committee members, trophies during tournament

A football tournament to preach peace, unity and reconciliation among inhabitants of Nkvurah quarter, in Mankon Fondom, Bamenda II Subdivision, Mezam Division, of the North West Region, has wrapped up in style.

The fifth edition of the epic sporting jamboree dubbed Nkvurah Community Tournament, drew its curtains on Monday, March 16. The competition kicked-off on November 17, 2025.

The final featured a highly anticipated clash between Zone 7 and Zone 3. It was attended by supporters who turned out in large numbers and created a lively atmosphere marked by cheers and celebration.

The enthralling matchup produced fireworks. However, at the end of the thrilling encounter, it was Zone 3 that emerged victorious in the men’s category. They lifted the trophy after a dominant performance.

It should also be recalled that competitions in the youth and women’s categories also saw winners rewarded, with participants taking home trophies that symbolized both effort and unity.

The final was played on a field surrounded by the remains of the new National Center for Youth and Sports, CENAJES building. The structure, it is worth recalling, was destroyed during the early days of the Anglophone Crisis.

For many, the setting captured the reality of life in the North West Region, where communities continue to rebuild amid visible scars.

Speaking at the event, the Quarter Head, Chofor Ismael, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and used the platform to call for peace and collective responsibility.

“I am very satisfied with the turnout for the tournament.  This is a clear indication that Nkvurah people are united and enjoy coming together,” Chofor said.

He stressed the need for his people to shorn violence. Chofor said “we are playing the final and before us are the ruins of the new CENAJES building that was completely destroyed during the start of the crisis.”

He added that: “I want my people to continue living together and protecting all we have in Nkvurah because if we destroy what is ours, it will affect only our village”.

Appeal to authorities to support communities

Chofor seized the occasion to call on authorities to support the community’s recovery efforts.

“I am grateful for the relative level of calmness the security forces have brought,” Chofor revealed.

He also pleaded with the “government to remember us and bring back the school which used to be booming before the start of the crisis”.

Traditional authorities commend initiative

A delegation from the Mankon Traditional Council praised the leadership of the Quarter Head for fostering unity and promoting development driven activities.

Community members pointed to ongoing projects such as the construction of bridges linking different zones as evidence of progress.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated sports committee ensured the success of the tournament, working alongside local councilors and residents.
