Mutengene: Road crash leaves one dead, several injured.

Cars destroyed in road crash

A road crash at night fall on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in Mutengene, Tiko Subdivision, Fako Division of the South West Region, has left at least one person dead, and several others injured and damaged motorcycles and cars.

The ghastly accident, accounts hold, involved a truck and an inter-interurban bus at a makeshift park along the Mutengene-Buea highway.

Sources recounted that the truck lost control while descending from Buea.

Other accounts have attributed the accident to brake failure, which caused the truck to veer into the Buea road park, where cars from Buea park drop travellers.

The out-of-control truck is said to have ploughed into vehicles and motorcycles, crushing more than 10 taxis and at least 15 motorcycles.

A local described the scene as one of "chaos and destruction", with the impact affecting people in the vicinity as well.

Fire-fighters and rescue teams, The Guardian Post gathered, rushed to the accident scene, and evacuated the injured to the Mutengene Baptist Hospital.

The driver of the out-of-control truck, other accounts hold, fled the scene before the angry population could get hold of him.

The number of casualties recorded at the site of the accident was yet to be confirmed as at the time we went to press.

Locals indicated that an unspecified number of persons sustained injuries of varying degrees, with in some critical conditions.

Mutengene lies on a key corridor in the South West Region, connecting Tiko, Buea and Limbe to other parts of the Region and beyond.

The road has a history of serious accidents, including past incidents involving heavy trucks losing control on slopes or in populated zones.

Sunday’s accident adds to a pattern of road safety concerns in Cameroon, where overloaded or poorly maintained heavy vehicles, combined with challenging terrain, high traffic, lack of serious enforcement of traffic and road safety laws have remained problematic.

On December 12, 2025, a fuel tanker lost control and plunged into several homes in Likomba, killing several persons.
